UK Review This is the first book in Pullman's trilogy. It won the Guardian Children's Fiction Award, the Carnegie Medal and the Children's Book of the Year. Lyra, the child protagonist, explores the bizarre parallel worlds into which she can slip. The book is complex, deeply emotional and thought-provoking. It is by no means easy reading, but richly rewarding for sophisticated readers. (12 yrs +) (Kirkus UK)
