A Literary Milestone!
Death in a Raincoat is the 20th collection in the acclaimed Re-Draft series bringing together contributions from 88 sparkling young Aotearoa New Zealand writers.
Passionate, moving, lively and always engaged, Death in a Raincoat is testimony to one of ...the strangest years in recent history, the year of the pandemic, of lockdowns, floods, fires and a major change in the political landscape.
The writers selected have negotiated this strange year with imagination, exuberance and resilience. Their stories, poems and graphic art will at times delight, and intrigue; they range from the deeply moving to the laugh-out-loud funny, from open-eyed honesty to absurdist whimsy.
This is yet another bumper crop from the best young writers of today, many of whom will be our major writers of tomorrow.

Author's Bio
Reading Death in a Raincoat, secondary school English teacher and author Alan Bunn picks out a line from In Search of a Definition of Strong, written by Sarah Eastwood of Cambridge: Christchurch flourishes stubbornly - a gorgeous city clinging to shaky ground.
Alan says it epitomises optimism and, despite the frightening cover, also epitomises the usual strength, intelligence and fascination of the entries in this grand series. He is also so impressed at the variety of schools represented and the number of entries.
Re-Draft has achieved twenty years of sublime work. Congratulations cubed. This must be one of the books most filled with quality in the country.
Tony Beyer, an English teacher and a poet, also congratulates on reaching this milestone. He says, 'I applaud the excellence of another fine collection. It bears out my belief in the standard setting itself from issue to issue. So much good writing in its own right, regardless of the age of the contributors, except that their age often gives them access to insights their elders have missed or forgotten.'
He notes 'a piece of sound editorial nous' to open with Simon Brown's accomplished, traditionally formal work, The Pantoglot Prince.' Tony was impressed with the polished, already professional level of Kate Twomey's Y2K. 'I don't like to single things out, but what a delight it must have been for the judges to receive such high quality, sustained efforts such as Helena Mayer's three entries - Nowhere to Stand; Question 3: How would you describe your gender? ; Trying to Fall Asleep, and Gabby Sumner's Herculean Modernity. Likewise the knowing authenticity of Dan Moskovitz's Empty Trains and Toby Govin-Fowler's Dead Faint.
For 20 years Re-Draft has not only encouraged young writers but has also launched some into further development. Tony notes that a poem by Leah Dodd is due to appear in this year's Poetry NZ yearbook.
