Adopting words from English into Maori and vice-versa has expanded and enriched the lexical bank of both languages. These loanwords are an important part of modern Maori. This dictionary presents over 3,000 loanwords that are, or have been, in common use in spoken and written Mao...ri. Many of the headwords in this dictionary do not occur in any other existing dictionary of Maori. The dictionary includes loanwords for personal names and place names, as well as the usual words found in dictionaries such as nouns, verbs and adjectives. The dictionary has a comprehensive introduction explaining how these loanwords have been adapted to the phonological and grammatical systems of Maori. Each headword is presented with its meanings, grammatical category and example sentences from the sources, with translations. An indication of the earliest occurrence each loanword was encountered and the frequency of use in the written sources are provided for most entries. Important sources for the loanwords included the Maori language newspapers, the Maori Bible and Nga Tangata Taumata Rau. An English-Maori finder list is provided.Read more
