How did a kid whose dad lived in the poorhouse become one of the most successful storytellers in the world? - James nearly died early on the morning he was born. - His grandmother told him something that's been his motto for his entire writing career - 'Hungry dogs run faster'. -... When James worked at a psychiatric hospital in Massachusetts, he met the singer James Taylor. And the poet Robert Lowell. - James's first novel, The Thomas Berryman Number, was turned down by thirty-one publishers. It then won the Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for best first mystery. - While he toiled in advertising hell, James wrote the ad jingle line 'I'm a Toys 'R' Us Kid'. - As a young writer, James once watched James Baldwin and Norman Mailer square off to trade punches at a literary party. - He has played golf with three American presidents - and has had nine holes in one. - Dolly Parton once sang Happy Birthday to James over the phone. She calls him J.J., for Jimmy James. - He wanted to write the kind of novel that would be read and re-read so many times that the binding breaks and the book literally falls apart, pages scattering in the wind. James says, 'I'm still working on that one'. So how did he wind up writing, and reading, so many books? This is a mystery story. Actually, come to think of it, quite a few people die.

NZ Review |
James Patterson by the raconteur himself is a tour de force that I recommend to everyone. One of the greatest storytellers of all time, Patterson has led an amazing life and has been stunningly successful on multiple fronts. It brings to mind Hemingway's A Moveable Feast. I love the pithy, bright anecdotes, and at times his poignant narrative will bring you to tears. You won't be able to put it down! -- PATRICIA CORNWELL, New York Times bestselling author The book was damn near addictive. I loved it. Patterson recounts turning points and life-shaping lessons in short, riveting bursts that inform, entertain, and satisfy-then propel you into the next story. What at first appears to be a fun collection of reminiscences begins to reveal clues and insights into a highly productive life well lived. That Patterson guy can write! -- RON HOWARD As the author of more than two hundred novels James Patterson has shown considerable potential as a writer. He reveals how he is working on that potential in his memoir. He talks about how he writes, which is educational and reveals a lot of who he is: creative, funny, and odd. Plus the book is always entertaining. You will enjoy the read. -- PHIL KNIGHT, creator of Nike and author of Shoe Dog In this breezy and revealing autobiography, James Patterson packs his narrative with scores of personal stories that will delight fans, and even non-fans, of America's storied storyteller. Whether it was getting punched out by an unhinged high school teacher, writing the line 'I'm a Toys 'R' Us Kid,' golfing with Bill Clinton, or getting rejected by a dating service, Patterson candidly lifts the curtain on his own life to reveal what inspired the novelist who has sold more than 400 million books and become a committed philanthropist in support of his cause celebre - reading. -- Ben Bradlee Jr., author of The Forgotten James Patterson's first rule of storytelling is 'be there.' And that's the genius of his autobiography. You're right there with him as he's growing up in Newburgh, New York; then on Madison Avenue; and as he begins to sell more books than anybody else on the planet. These are the stories of his life, some charming, some funny as hell, some highly emotional. Spoiler alert: whether you're a James Patterson fan or not, you're going to love this book. -- MIKE LUPICA, New York Times bestselling author |
