David Cossgrove was undoubtedly one of the key players in the social reforms of the 20th Century. Early in 1908, David was watching a self-formed patrol of Boy Scouts undertaking adventurous activities on a riverbank, near their homes in Kaiapoi, Canterbury. He was so impressed w...ith their enthusiasm and ingenuity, that he wrote to the founder of Scouting, Robert Baden-Powell and asked permission to form the Boy Scout movement in New Zealand. Scouting had just begun the year before, in the UK in 1907. David was granted permission to form the movement in New Zealand and with the help of the first Scoutmaster, Ted Mallasch invested and registered with the UK, the first patrol. Within 12 short years, David had singlehandedly created a movement that was 30,000 strong with 5,000 leaders. This movement played a key role during WW1 with its support services for NZ troops. The Scouts collected items that would be useful for departing troops, e.g., compasses. They also acted as messengers for the local army wardens. The Scouts were also to the fore during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic, again acting as messengers and delivering medicines. What led this teacher to become such a social reformer? Before this book was written, little was known about David's life. The author explores David's service to education, his 40 years in the Volunteer movement, his writing and his commitment to nature. David was a well-respected teacher, who had been Headmaster in three schools before an unfortunate fatal accident saw him removed from his Headmastership of a large school in Westport. In 1894, he finally found a new position at the Tuahiwi Native School near Kaiapoi, a school with only two teachers. Kevin explores David's extraordinary life and his work with the Volunteer Movement (military). On David's death in 1920, he had reached the position of Lieutenant-Colonel. He also looks at David's two tours of duty in the South African War. The author tells the story of how David Cossgrove went

My thesis is that New Zealand today is awash with fake history issuing from those seeking political advantage and material gain or personal satisfaction ... There is big money in reconstructing and fast forwarding history to the present ... We are in a miasmatic swap - up to our ...necks. Unless we all endeavour to arrest the spread of false history we are on a course for increased racial disharmony and apartheid. Only by upholding the truth, whatever our differences, can we truly identify in future as New Zealanders.

In May 1844, an exceptionally large gathering of Maori took place at Remuera for a great feast, known as a hakari. In attendance were manuhiri (guests) from Tamaki-Makaurau, the Waikato, and Bay of Plenty, along with the Governor of New Zealand and his officials. In the 19th cen...tury there were many spectacular feasts or hakari, which drew the attention of colonial observers, commentators, and artists. The historic Remuera hakari was observed and documented by artist Joseph Jenner Merrett in his best-known watercolour ""Native Feast held at Remuera, Auckland, New Zealand, May 11th 1844"".

Jy was maar net so lekker gekuier, lag Ruan kliphard.

In this book, Janis outlines a simple approach that she has used herself to improve sleep. She spent 12 years researching practical ways to improve her brain after damage in 2007. She believes that sleep is fundamental to good health, hapiness and sanity. This book is about "t...he guts" of how to sleep well and her story of transformation. It may be the first book written by a non-techical specialist in the language that most of us can graps and with a pragmatic approach that has been tried and tested by the author.
