This collection presents an international perspective on issues of training and accreditation at the Master's level of course provision in the initial and continuing professional development of teachers, coining the phrase 'masterliness in education'. It provides a comparative ba...ckground to inform the debate about the level at which teachers' knowledge bases make them most effective in terms of both pedagogic expertise and pupils' outcomes. The book examines and illustrates the relationship between master's level education and professionalism through the lenses of reflective evaluation, narrative inquiry and critique. Discussion of issues of professionalism and acculturation of teachers exemplifies the tension that arises in modern educational systems across the world between teacher accountability and teacher autonomy and argues that masterliness in education can only be acquired through the professional freedom afforded by teacher autonomy within empowering frameworks of professional development. Several chapters deliberate the relationship between the roles of schools and higher education institutions in both initial and continuing teacher education at master's level, providing argument and evidence to show that this partnership is crucial to the effectiveness of the professional development that supports improved outcomes for learners. This book demonstrates that masterliness in education, an aspiration of initial and continuing teacher education internationally, is a state of advanced professional critical thinking linked to action and informed by research and evidence. Through the exercise of this criticality teacher empowerment, expertise and autonomy increase as masterliness develops. There is considerable convergence in the provision of these elements of Masters' level courses internationally, and this enables the debate to highlight good practice and to exemplify those essential characteristics of masterliness in teaching that lead to the continued improve

This book provides deep insight into the social situation of students with different kinds of special needs in various European countries. Research findings concerning students' attitudes towards peers with disabilities, and teachers' feedback on students' social behaviour, are a...lso presented. Full inclusion of students with special educational needs in mainstream education requires equity in each student's chances for academic and social-emotional development, and their participation in society. In the context of inclusive education, it is important to take students' social participation into consideration. Are students with special educational needs (SEN) accepted by their peers? Do they interact with their peers during breaks and classes? Do they have friends, or do they feel lonely in their class? This book seeks to answer such questions, seeing social participation as a crucial ingredient, as well as an outcome, of inclusive education. This topic is critical because many previous studies show students with SEN having a high risk of social exclusion. This volume will be of interest to everyone studying special needs education, especially those concerned with future improvement of social participation for all students. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Journal of Special Needs Education. Chapter 1 is available Open Access at https://www.routledge.com/products/9780367209186.

In Education in Radical Uncertainty, Stephen Carney and Ulla Ambrosius Madsen return to the philosophical and social critique of Jean Baudrillard and relate his work to the field of education, particularly to comparative studies of youth and schooling in different parts of the wo...rld. The book explores how the initial interest in Baudrillard's work has been replaced by skepticism, and how the field of educational studies has been complicit in marginalizing his influence. The authors argue that labelling Baudrillard as the most extreme of the post-modernists is both misguided and unfortunate, denying a generation of education researchers an engagement with insights that are both profound and challenging. They do so by exploring three of his key ideas: simulation leading to spectacle and seduction; integral reality leading to disappearance; and evil, reversibility and return. The authors situate Baudrillard's works in the broader context of works by other post-foundational theorists, such as Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze, as well as exploring them in relation to empirical studies. Considering ethnographic work with youth in three quite different contexts - Denmark, South Korea and Zambia - the authors use a range of data to bring the different field studies alive and to contrast them with conventional portraits of the Global South. Encompassing both theoretical and methodological innovation, Education in Radical Uncertainty provides inspiration for scholars and students attempting to approach fields of comparative education and youth studies anew.

In Democracy and Mathematics Education, Kurt Stemhagen and Catherine Henney develop a way of thinking about the nature and purposes of math that is inclusive, participatory, and thoroughly human. They use these ideas to create a school mathematics experience that can enhance stud...ents' math abilities and democratic potential. They locate mathematics' origins in human activity and highlight the rich but often overlooked links between mathematical activity and democratic, social practices. Democratic mathematics education foregrounds student inquiry and brings to light the moral dimensions of a discipline that has both remarkable utility and inevitable limitations. For math educators, the book's humanities approach helps to see the subject anew. For philosophers, it provides an important real world context for wrestling with perennial and timely questions, engaging democratic and evolutionary theory to transform school math. This alternative approach to mathematics and mathematics education provides a guide for how to use math to make democracy a larger part of school and wider social life.
