What do the food cultures of Cape Town, Mumbai, Copenhagen, Rio de Janeiro and Tel Aviv have in common? Despite their geographical distance, in each major city the same aesthetic of kombucha, rough wooden tables, home-roasted coffee and bespoke rough-hewn furnishings can be found... in all of them, as part of a new aesthetic sweeping the globe. The aesthetic may be home-grown and rustic but it is all carefully designed and masterfully instagrammed to create a new transnational aesthetic regime of urban consumption. This is the Global Brooklyn , inspired by the New York borough and influenced by many networked locations around the globe, where consumers participate in the global circulation of visual styles, flavors, practices, and values. This book sets out this phenomenon across different world cities, and argues for a stronger appreciation of design and materialities in shaping food cultures. Through analysis of the global mobility of high-end aesthetical, consumerist, and production practices, how they materialize and are situated within a variety of local contexts, the contributors look at the connections between food and eating habits and design in order to give a clearer sense of the positive and negative consequences of the meeting of cultures through globalisation.

To mark the tenth anniversary of The IISS Manama Dialogue process and to capitalise on the new light it has shed on security issues in the Gulf and the wider Middle East, this Adelphi brings together the results of two workshops held by the IISS in its Middle East office in Manam...a. Featuring essays by nine IISS analysts and a number of outside experts, the book examines the most important geostrategic issues in the region, including the myriad security challenges it faces. These interlinked papers focus in particular on the regional ramifications of the civil war in Syria and the effects of the United States changing posture in the Middle East. The aim of the Adelphi is to both highlight and develop the ongoing discussions and debates about Gulf security that have taken place in the Manama Dialogue over the previous decade, and that will continue to do so over the next ten years. As such, it capitalises on the IISS's global reputation not only as the world leader in convening para-diplomatic events, but also as a provider of the best possible objective information and analysis on global military and political developments.

Armed groups are intrinsic to conflict. Pursuing myriad aims, they shape and are shaped by the conflict landscape. UN missions too inhabit this landscape. They too must decide how best to pursue their goals of supporting early peacebuilding and so-called stabilisation. This book ...argues that the UN is peacekeeping in places where there is no peace to keep. A profoundly confused UN has failed to develop the instruments to adequately identify armed groups, and then deal with the challenge they pose. This book is a policy guide for UN missions. It contemplates the challenging nature of non-permissive UN mission environments and offers a challenge to the UN to think afresh about the way it undertakes missions in these settings. The book appropriates several underdeveloped concepts robust peacekeeping, political processes, and the protection of civilians and uses them to ignite the conversation on a UN stabilisation doctrine.

The study of modern Chinese history has developed rapidly in recent decades and has seen increased exploration of new topics and innovative approaches. Resulting from a special issue of Modern Chinese History Studies, this volume is devoted to showcasing the healthy development o...f Chinese modern history studies, and has already been revised twice in the original language. This three-volume set exhibits major achievements on the study of modern Chinese history and shows how the role of history was in debate, transformation, and re-evaluation throughout this tortuous yet prosperous period. Articles on 23 different topics are collected from over 30 prominent historians in order to represent their insights on the developmental paths of Chinese historical studies. Drawing on a large number of case studies of critical historical events, such as imperial China and the Chinese Workers' Movement, this volume sets out to explore topics such as the history of Sino-foreign relations as well as the history of workers' movements and youth movements. This book will be a valuable reference for scholars and students of Chinese history.

Developing Semantic Web Services is well-informed about work on WS [Web Services] and the SemWeb [Semantic Web], and in particular . . . understand[s] OWL-S . . . very well . . .. Also, the book . . . fill[s] a need that, to my knowledge, hasn't been met at all. ---David Martin, ...editor OWL-S Coalition The inventor of the World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee, is also the originator of the next generation Web architecture, the Semantic Web. Currently, his World Wide Web consortium (W3C) team works to develop, extend, and standardize the Web's markup languages and tools. The objective of the Semantic Web Architecture is to provide a knowledge representation of linked data in order to allow machine processing on a global scale. The W3C has developed a new generation of open standard markup languages which are now poised to unleash the power, flexibility, and above all---logic---of the next generation Web, as well as open the door to the next generation of Web Services. There are many ways in which the two areas of Web Services and the Semantic Web could interact to lead to the further development of Semantic Web Services. Berners-Lee has suggested that both of these technologies would benefit from integration that would combine the Semantic Web's meaningful content with Web Services' business logic. Areas such as UDDI and WSDL are ideally suited to be implemented using Semantic Web technology. In addition, SOAP could use RDF payloads, remote RDF query and updates, and interact with Semantic Web business rules engines, thereby laying the foundation for Semantic Web Services. This book presents the complete Language Pyramid of Web markup languages, including Resource Description Framework (RDF), Web Ontology Language (OWL) and OWL-Services (OWL-S) along with examples and software demos. The source code for the Semantic Web Author, an Integrated Development Environment for Semantic Markup Languages is available on CD-ROM with the book.

Embedding memories into landscape. Measuring moisture, pressure and wind speed within a bedroom. Drawing power with a potato. These are but a few of the preoccupations described within this book. 'Devices' is a manual celebrating the invention of architectural and spatial machine...s. Nostalgic, metaphorical, analytical or even the down-right daft, each of the illustrated pieces demonstrates the potential for spatial occupation, leading to new territories in architectural design. A detailed analysis of each device and a 'recipe' for its construction is provided, including working drawings, assembly diagrams, materials and component descriptions. The reader will not only gain an insight into the technical makeup of the devices, but will have all the information at their fingertips to design and construct ground-breaking innovations of their own. With over 40 devices, this book will inspire architects, designers, engineers and artists alike.
