Connected: A Brief History of Global Telecommunications (EPUB ebook)

              By Knott-Craig, Alan; Tysoe, John

'Mr Watson, come here, I want to see you.'It's been almost 150 years since Alexander Graham Bell said these immortal words on the first ever phone call, to his assistant in the next room. Between 10 March 1876 and now, the world has changed beyond recognition. And telecommunicati...ons, which has played a fundamental role in this change, has itself evolved into an industry that was the sole preserve of science fiction. When the world's first modern mobile telephone network was launched in 1979, there were just over 300 million telephones. Today, there are more than eight billion, most of which are mobile. Most people in most countries can now contact each other in a matter of seconds. Soon we'll all be connected, to each other, and to complex computer networks that provide us with instant information, but also observe and record our actions. No other phenomenon touches so many of us, so directly, each and every day of our lives.A concise edition of John Tysoe and Alan Knott-Craig's magnum opus, A History of Telecommunications, this book gives you the information you need to know about what keeps us connected and how we got here.

Laura also interweaves insights and interviews from her "Mom Squad": an eclectic group of mothers of all ages and professional backgrounds, including a world-renowned survival expert, a top neuroscientist, creator of Orange Is the New Black Jenji Kohan, actress Mila Kunis, author and activist Amber Tamblyn, and chef Daphne Oz-among other inspiring moms, who lend their voices to the much needed conversation of what it means to be a mother. Diversity in organizations is now an established topic of interest for practitioners and academics alike. A growing number of publications, including several handbooks, constitute a sizeable body of work that is documenting and analyzing diversity in organizations, drawing on dis...ciplines such as sociology, psychology, anthropology, management, and economics. This book addresses the complementary question of how diversity in organizations is, and can be, researched. As such, rather than claiming to provide an exhaustive overview of all the methods that have been employed to research diversity, the aim is to provide readers with insights into the potential research designs for such studies in contemporary organizations. This includes but is not limited to methods; providing critiques or novel perspectives on long-used methods, questioning the role of the researcher in the field, theorizing the researcher and their methods as activism, and finally problematizing research standpoints and their ontological, epistemological, and affective dimensions. With this the editors intend to reflect scholars' shifting emphases on identification of diversity and related practices (including concerns for intersectionality), the critique of such categorizations and practices, and the more recent emphasis on intervention. To fulfill these ambitions, leading as well as up-and-coming scholars in the field contribute their reflections on these issues and illustrate their theoretical and methodological points with empirical insights from projects they are currently engaged in. A wide array of methods across the qualitative and quantitative spectrum are included, providing a holistic view on researching diversity in organizations by considering all aspects of research design, including the central but too often sidelined role of the researcher in it. Each contribution will unpack an actual empirical investigation in order to address and illustrate the diversity of research approaches to div
