"Planes were rarely seen above the small Central Otago sheep-farming town of Ranfurly in the 1940s. Yet as a young boy, Tom Enright had a fascination with the skies that quickly developed into a longing to become a pilot. He joined the RNZAF as an engineer in 1951, and was sent t...o England at just 16 to attend the revered Royal Air Force college in Cranwell. Returning to New Zealand to join the Vampire fighter squadron in Ohakea, Tom became a famed member of the RNZAF aerobatic team. Later he became a flying commander at Wigram air base, before captaining a Sunderland flying boat to isolated communities in the vast South Pacific, often to the upper limits of the plane's endurance. From the near-catastrophic opening of Wellington airport to flying Boeing 747s into the world's biggest airports, this is Tom Enright's story of the mishaps, misadventures and high-altitude drama of a 45-year flying career"--Back cover.

In 1962 Dean Acheson famously described Britain as having lost an Empire but not yet found a role. Perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than in the realms of nuclear weapons. An increasingly marginal world power, successive post-war British governments felt that an independent n...uclear deterrent was essential if the country was to remain at the top table of world diplomacy. Focusing on a key twenty-year period, this study explores Britain's role in efforts to bring about a nuclear test ban treaty between 1954 and 1973. Taking a broadly chronological approach, it examines the nature of defence planning, the scientific goals that nuclear tests were designed to secure, Anglo-American relationships, the efficacy of British diplomacy and its contribution to arms control and disarmament. A key theme of the study is to show how the UK managed to balance the conflicting pressures created by its determination to remain a credible nuclear power whilst wanting to pursue disarmament objectives, and how these pressures shifted over the period in question. Based on a wealth of primary sources this book opens up the largely ignored subject of the impact of arms control on the UK nuclear weapons programme. Its appraisal of the relationship between the requirements and developments of the UK nuclear weapons programme against international and domestic pressures for a test ban treaty will be of interest to anyone studying post-war British defence and foreign policy, history of science, arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation and international relations. It also provides important background information on current events involving nuclear proliferation and disarmament.

Through the windows of the slowly turning spacecraft they looked out at the place where the sun had once been, and there was the moon- a huge, magnificent sphere bathed in the eerie blue light of earthshine, each crater rendered in ghostly detail.'The race to the moon was won spe...ctacularly by Apollo 11 on 20 July 1969. When astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took their 'giant step' across a ghostly lunar landscape, they were watched by some 600 million people on Earth 250,000 miles away. A Man on the Moon is the definitive account of the heroic Apollo programme- from the tragedy of the fire in Apollo 1 during a simulated launch, through the euphoria of the first moonwalk, to the discoveries made by the first scientist in space aboard Apollo 17. Drawing on hundreds of hours of in-depth interviews with the astronauts and team, this is the story of the twentieth century's greatest human achievement, minute-by-minute, in the words of those who were there.

Looking at the key, but relatively neglected, campaign of 1943, this book offers a thorough and nuanced reassessment of the RAF bomber offensive at a time when the war in Europe still hung in the balance. Whilst the bombing campaign against German cities has long been one of the ...most controversial and hotly debated aspects of the Second World War, most of the attention has been directed towards the vast 'thousand bomber raids' of 1944-5, by which time it was clear that an Allied victory was inevitable. As such, the direction of earlier campaigns is often glossed over as a simple progression, attacking targets progressively deeper inside Germany. But, as this study reveals, in reality the path of Bomber Command's strategic operations was not so linear. Instead, the period from August to November 1943 shows clearly that ACM Sir Arthur Harris conducted an offensive against targets throughout central and southern Germany. In other words, he directed a fourth (or hidden ) air offensive which ranks alongside the Battles of the Ruhr, Hamburg and Berlin. Given the on-going moral, strategic and tactical debates regarding the Allied bombing campaign, this book offers an important new dimension to the argument. By focussing attention back on events of 1943, not only is a neglected campaign given proper consideration, but a fuller understanding of the entire air campaign of the war is possible.

A new pumping subsystem used as a mass-driver was invented that takes advantage of certain unrecognized asymmetries in Newton's 3rd law when that law is applied within a non-inertial rotating subsystem. When this new mass driver is inserted into a closed fluid recycling system, a...ll of the integrated actions and reactions within the closed recycling system result in a net integrated non-zero linear recoil of the system's integrated internal forces. The mass driver produces an unrecognized and massive recoil within the system that can be used as linear propulsion through the internal recycling of scalable and sometimes a small quantity of mass in the form of liquids. Such propulsion systems are forbidden by the linear interpretation of Newton's 3rd law using only typical linear recycling components. The power requirement for the system can be scaled to produce substantial thrusts, though lower powered space propulsion can be achieved using solar panels or small nuclear sources. A low-powered small self-contained propulsion module could move large satellites into a lunar orbit in a few weeks of continuous operation. A 10kw nuclear power source could move a Pioneer-sized space craft into a Jovian orbit in two years of continuous operation.
