A GUARDIAN BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR A NEW STATESMAN BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR A DAILY TELEGRAPH BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR A NEW REPUBLIC BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR A TIME MAGAZINE TOP 10 NONFICTION BOOK OF 2013 From ambitious scientists rising above the clouds to test the air, to brave generals ...floating over enemy lines to watch troop movements, this wonderful book offers a seamless fusion of history, art, science, biography and the metaphysics of flight. It is a masterly portrait of human endeavour, recklessness, vision and hope. In this heart-lifting book, Richard Holmes, author of the best-selling The Age of Wonder, follows the daring and enigmatic men and women who risked their lives to take to the air (or fall into the sky). Why they did it, what their contemporaries thought of them, and how their flights revealed the secrets of our planet is a compelling adventure that only Holmes could tell. It is not a conventional history of ballooning. In a sense it is not really about balloons at all. It is about what balloons gave rise to. It is about the spirit of discovery itself and the extraordinary human drama it produces. From the dramatic and exhilarating early Anglo-French balloon rivalries, the crazy firework flights of the beautiful Sophie Blanchard, the long-distance voyages of the American entrepreneur John Wise and French photographer Felix Nadar to the balloons used to observe the horrors of modern battle during the Civil War (including a flight taken by George Armstrong Custer); the legendary tale of at least sixty-seven manned balloons that escaped from Paris (the first successful civilian airlift in history) during the Prussian siege of 1870-71; the high-altitude exploits of James Glaisher who rose seven miles above the earth without oxygen, helping to establish the new science of meteorology; and how Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, and Jules Verne felt the imaginative impact of flight and allowed it to soar in their work. Previously published as Falling Upwards.

Taking students and instructors step by step through the major issues surrounding the use of English in the aviation industry, this book provides a clear introduction to turning research into practice in the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and a valuable case study o...f applied linguistics in action. With both cutting-edge research and evidence-based practice, the authors, all experts in this field, explore the critical role of English in aviation across a variety of contexts. These include the national and global policies impacting training and language assessment for pilots, air-traffic controllers, ground staff and students. Focusing on a very important but not well addressed area of ESP research and pedagogy, this book uses a range of corpus-based findings, simulator transcripts, and related research to provide an effective and efficient analysis of the language needs of the aviation industry and an extended look at linguistic principles in action. With case studies, transcriptions, radiotelephony and a clear breakdown of the common vocabulary and phrasal patterns of aviation discourse, the book offers students and teachers an insight into the requirements and challenges of successful intercultural communication in this industry, as well as clarifying how to teach, develop and assess aviation English language courses.

Climate change has become a crucial issue for the air transport industry. Back in 1999, the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published a specific report on Aviation and the Global Atmosphere. Since then policymakers as well as airline managers have taken ...a variety of measures to reduce the environmental impact of aviation. However, the implementation of mitigation measures in a global industry provides several challenges. The European Union has been forced to revise their comprehensive Emissions Trading Scheme, thereby causing competitive distortions between EU and Non-EU airlines. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has been given the task of developing a global market-based mechanism for the reduction of aviation's greenhouse gas emissions until 2016, which should be implemented until 2020. Therefore, the topic will remain high on the international agenda. This book analyzes the political, economic and managerial challenges for policy makers and the air transport industry as they face climate change. Based on an overview of the scientific background and technological options for emissions reduction, the book provides an in-depth assessment of environmental regulation as well as environmental management as well as up-to-date analysis by top researchers from several different countries. It will be of interest to researchers in diverse areas (economics, political science, engineering, natural sciences), to air transport policy makers, and to managers in the aviation industry.

This short book grapples with two vast questions: the nature of our minds, and our place in the wider universe. It considers how one mutually influences the development of the other. The changes and challenges that will accompany the first humans to leave planet Earth and travel ...to another planet, or even further, will not only impact upon our technical capacities, but also represent a watershed moment within our individual and collective human psychology. Many of the problems of resource-use, environmental degradation, and waste or destructive processes are contained in the larger vision of exploring another environment and planet. But the book also offers a shift in perspective that allows us consider humanity from an alternative, more holistic perspective, reappraising our own minds both individually and within dynamic social processes. This book considers our place and purpose in the widest possible perspective, that of space exploration and the much wider natural universe. It doesn't seek to answer these questions, but to provide a perspective to explore even further.

This book is a political economic analysis of China's transformation to become a global aviation power. It explores how China's policy goal has been achieved and executed through bilateral air services negotiations and how and to what extent the factors have affected the consider...ations and negotiation outcome. The book aims to identify the driving forces that have shaped China's ever-evolving international air transport policy direction and goals in the past four decades. Using primary data collected from dozens of interviewees and secondary data from various sources, the study examines the time-associated factors and circumstances surrounding a handful rounds of bilateral negotiations between China and its selective counterparts. It further analyses how and to what extent the identified factors have affected China's negotiation strategies and outcome. It argues that China's international air transport policy direction is in alignment with the country's overall strategic mission and its goal is set to support the country's endeavour to realise the China dream . It concludes that driving forces at international, regional, domestic and institutional levels have an impact on the country's policy direction and goal setting, although these factors are time- and circumstances-constrained. The book is a must read for a wide audience, including but not limited to industry professionals and scholars with an interest in China's political economy, policymaking, international trade, air transport, government behaviour, corporate political activities, aviation liberalisation, and bilateral negotiations.
