Explore the gender dimension and expand the dialogue in your classroom through this collection of case studies, empirical studies, and theoretical essays on women's issues in public administration. Until now, there has been a paucity of research exploring how gender informs theor...y and practice in public administration which undermines the equitable representation of women in our society and precludes the integration of gender analysis into public sector practice and policies. This is the first book of its kind written about the female endeavor in public administration from the perspective of female public administrators and academics. Women in Public Administration illuminates women's past and emerging challenges, in a predominantly male based public sector that are fundamental to practitioners, students, and faculty of public administration and policy. For example, how women administrators have been affected by male dominated labor markets, ethics and law, management, financial institutions, and public service. This book extends beyond the existing works in the field by furthering the discussion and bridging the gender gap in public administration theory and praxis by continuing the efforts of the female public administrators who began to unravel the inequity in our public organizations and the under representation of women in our society.

Governing in a Global World captures the panorama of women governing around the world. Even though the modern era marks history's greatest advancements for women, worldwide they hold fewer than 30 percent of decision-making positions and are often missing from negotiating tables ...where policies are made and conflicts resolved. The opening chapters present trends and context for studying women in public service by focusing on path-setters across the globe, the status of women in the world's executive and legislative bodies, and their participation in public service across several nations. Later chapters examine power, leadership and representation of women in public service, with several chapters looking at women governing from a regional perspective in the Middle East, Sub Sahara Africa, Latin America and China. The final chapter presents empirical evidence that shows how policies to increase women's representation in the public arena reduce gender inequality more than any other policy intervention. Taken together, the chapters illustrate the worldwide importance of, and challenges to, promoting gender equality and women governing.

Governments around the globe are grappling with increasingly complex, systemic issues that result from the tentacles of globalization, interconnected economies, increasing inequality, urbanization, demographic shifts, threats of global pandemics and climate change. While it is ge...nerally recognized that diversity in experience and thinking contributes to innovations in addressing these and related issues, it is also generally recognized that there is still a long road to travel before leadership in public service represents the diverse societies in which governments and non-profit organizations operate and serve. Out of the close to 200 nation-states, about 25 percent have ever been governed by a woman at the helm. As a result of this gender gap, it is obvious that women are not fully participating in government decisions that affect their lives and livelihoods and nations are not capitalizing on the potential of more than half their citizens. The importance of advancing women s leadership in the public service has continued to gain traction, particularly women s participation in the political arena and the status of women in political leadership positions. The same level of attention has not, however, been given to the role and impact of women's participation at lower levels in the public service. A critical mass of women in public administration, especially in senior decision-making positions, is important not only for equity reasons but also because it brings diversity in perspectives to policy and other discussions. Given the increasingly interconnected world, a transnational conversation on women in public administration is needed to address these and other issues faced by women who pursue public purposes purposes that cross borders and whose impact is not confined in scope. This handbook will survey the status of women in public administration in the U.S. and in other regions and countries across the globe with a specific focus on best practices, challenges and
