              A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol (EPUB ebook – Main)

              By Dickens, Charles

'Bah,'said Scrooge, 'Humbug.'But that was before he was presented with visions of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet to Come, which gave him a whole new lease of life:'I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a schoolboy. I am as gi...ddy as a drunken man. A merry Christmas to everybody! A happy New Year to all the World!'Old Ebenezer Scrooge is too mean to spend money on coals for the fire in his counting-house, where his clerk Bob Cratchit shivers in the winter cold.Declining an invitation to his nephew Fred's Christmas party, and refusing to give money to charity, he is ready for his usual miserly Christmas in his cold, dingy apartment. But that night, the ghost of his dead partner Jacob Marley appears, in chains, and tells him to expect a visit from three spirits over the next three nights. Sure enough, the Ghost of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet to Come lead Scrooge through his early years, the meagre Christmas about to happen in Bob Cratchit's family and the jolly Christmas party at his nephew's home, and finally a vision of his own death as a wealthy but avaricious and unhappy miser.Waking from these visions, Scrooge is given a chance to redeem himself, attending Fred's party and lavishing gifts on the Cratchit family and learning that kindness and generosity to others lead to his own happiness.

              The Old Curiosity Shop

The Old Curiosity Shop (EPUB ebook)

              By Dickens, Charles

First published as a weekly serial from 1840 to 1841, "The Old Curiosity Shop" by Charles Dickens is a novel that details the life of a beautiful young orphaned girl named Nell Trent. As the story begins, she lives with her loving grandfather in his London curiosity shop, happy, ...but lonely with only Kit, a kind and honest boy employed in the shop, for a friend. Their fortunes take a turn for the worse when her grandfather loses badly at his secret nighttime gambling activities, something he only did in the hope of affording a better life for Nell. The cruel money lender Daniel Quilp seizes the shop to pay the grandfather's debt and they are forced to leave for the English countryside, penniless and alone. After their departure, they are sought by both friends who wish to help them and cruel men with harmful designs. Nell and her grandfather, forced to beg for their support, ultimately experience the extremes of human loyalty and villainy in their state of abject poverty. Although one of his lesser known works, Dickens artfully displays a cast of diverse characters in a tale that captivates readers from the first page to its tragic conclusion. This edition includes a biographical afterword.
