Thomas and Mary Ann POOLE, nee TUCKWELL with seven children arrived at Port Chalmers, New Zealand, after a very fast passage of 82 days on 13 February 1875, having sailed from Gravesend, London on 23 November 1874, on board the Gareloch, a clipper ship built two years earlier at ...Glasgow. The Government paid most of their passage which cost 87 pounds ($174). Thomas William Poole (1835-1885) was the 8th child of 13, Mary Ann Tuckwell (1838-1918) was the 11th child of 13. They married at Sandwich, Kent in 1859. Both were from seafaring families and were second cousins as both descended from great grandparents, James & Elizabeth Tuckwell, nee Reely. Of their 11 children, seven survived to produce 77 grandchildren, of whom 50 had families varying in size from one to 15. Hence in 2012 this pioneering couple have 2597+ descendants. Numbers in the seven branches + 4 children who died in the first generation were:- B1 Mary Ann Eliza "Polly" DAWSON = 93, B2 Edward Samuel "Ted" POOLE = 826, B4 Caroline "Lucy" Lindsay = 410 B5 John Thomas POOLE = 239 B6 Annie Eleanor Jane "Nell" BEER = 252, B7 Rose Elizabeth JOHNSTONE = 320, B10 Margaret Annie STUART = 453. Sandwich is one of the best preserved medieval English towns and is surrounded by small villages such as Eastry, Ash, Marshborough and Woodnesborough where most of the Poole children were born. St Mary's parish church, venue of their marriage ceremony, is now the home of St Mary's Art Centre. It is a stunning 14th century building where all types of celebrations are held - music, drama, arts and community events.
