An excerpt from the INTRODUCTION - General Character of the Book: The book purports to give the last words, at the approach of death, of each of the twelve patriarchs to his sons. It is evident that the general idea of the book is based upon Jacob's last words to his sons as reco...rded in Gen. xlix. 1-27. Just as Jacob portrays the character of his sons and declares to them what shall befall them, so in our book each of the patriarchs is represented as describing, in some sense, his own character and as foretelling what shall come to pass among his posterity in the last times. From this latter point of view the book partakes of the character of a prophetic-apocalyptic work. In six of the testaments, those of Reuben, Simeon, Judah, Dan, Naphthali and Joseph, there is a certain correspondence between our book and Gen. xlix. regarding the characters of the patriarchs; as for the remaining six patriarchs no such correspondence exists.

The Book of Baruch is a Bible pseudepigrapha; a deuterocanonical work attributed to Baruch ben Neriah, the scribe of the prophet Jeremiah. The Assumption of Moses is a Jewish apocryphal work concerning hidden prophecies that Moses revealed to Joshua prior to the latter inheriting... his leadership of the ancient Jews. Together these works constitute typical examples of popular Biblical texts which are extra-canonical; most Christian and Jewish groups do not regard their contents as true. Their origins are definitively proven to be several centuries after the time they purport to be from. However, theological scholars have expressed some interest, particularly given the time and context of the writing; being as these pseudepigrapha are old texts, they themselves carry value. This edition contains a lengthy, explanatory introduction by W. O. E. Oesterley, and the well-regarded translations of Bible scholars R. H. Charles (for Baruch) and William John Ferrar (for Moses).

2020 Reprint of the 1913 Edition. Volume Two Only, the Pseudepigrapha. Volume One, the Aprocrypha, is published separately with ISBN 978-1684224432. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha are two s...eparate groups of works dating primarily from the period of the Second Temple. The name Apocrypha is applied to a collection of books not included in the canon of the Bible although they are incorporated in the canon of the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches. Robert Henry Charles (1855-1931) was an Irish biblical scholar and theologian. He left parochial work in 1889 to devote himself to biblical research and became the greatest authority of his time in matters of Jewish eschatology and apocrypha. He devoted his life to biblical research, and he became one of the primary authorities on matters of Jewish culture and theology, eschatology in particular. In 1913, Charles published an English translation of the Apocryphal (or Deuterocanonical) books of the Bible, including those not typically printed in Bibles that include the Apocrypha. This was followed by volume two of the same series, which covered the Pseudepigrapha. His translations of the Book of Enoch and the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs especially are still widely used.

The religion and theology of Jewish Apocryphal and Pseudepigraphic writings is here set forth in eight chapters dealing with Prophecy and Apocalyptic, The Kingdom of God in Apocalyptic Literature, The Messiah in Prophecy and Apocalyptic, The Rise and Development in Israel of the ...Doctrine of a Blessed Future Life, Man's Forgiveness of His Neighbor, A Study in Religious Development, Reinterpretation and Comprehension, The Literature, The Old Testament Apocrypha, The Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament. Dr. Charles will be at once remembered as the editor of the recent commentary, in two quarto volumes, on The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament, as the editor and commentator of numerous Jewish pseudepigraphic works, and as the author of the important Eschatology-Hebrew, Jewish, and Christian. He is the world's best authority on the literature of what used to be called four centuries of silence between the Old Testament and the New. These four centuries have been revealed by modern scholarship as filled by a vigorous literary activity, the products of which are important beyond estimation in the development of religious thought from Old Testament ideas to those of the New Testament. The theological, religious, and literary evolution of that period is here set forth in topical form and in popular phraseology, encompassed in a volume that slips easily into the pocket. Praise of Dr. Charles' work is superfluous. Only one criticism is suggested-were the last two chapters made the first two a considerable gainwould result for those who approach this subject for the first time.

HISTORY OF THE INTERPRETATION OF THE APOCALYPSE. BEFORE we enter on a detailed study of the various methods of interpretation that have been applied to the Apocalypse since the earliest times to the present, I must preface our investigations with a few introductory remarks. First... of all, while recognizing the close affinities with Jewish Apocalyptic in general, I must point out one important characteristic that differentiates Christian Apocalyptic literature of the first century of the Christian era from Jewish Apocalyptic. In the second place, I shall put forward some general and for the most part obvious considerations, which will serve in some measure to provide a preliminary canon of criticism, by the use of which we shall be able to recognize amongst the many conflicting arid contradictory methods, those methods which were more or less justifiable from the outset.
