Word Frequencies in Written and Spoken English is a landmark volume in the development of vocabulary frequency studies. Whereas previous books have in general given frequency information about the written language only, this book provides information on both speech and writing. I...t not only gives information about the language as a whole, but also about the differences between spoken and written English, and between different spoken and written varieties of the language. The frequencies are derived from a wide ranging and up-to-date corpus of English: the British National Corpus, which was compiled from over 4,000 written texts and spoken transcriptions representing the present day language in the UK. The book is based on a new version of the corpus (available from 2001) providing more accurate grammatical information, which is essential (for example) for distinguishing words like leaves (noun) and leaves (verb) with different meanings. The book begins with a general introduction, explaining why such information is important and highlighting interesting linguistic findings that emerge from the statistical analysis of the British National Corpus vocabulary. It also contains twenty four 'interest boxes' which highlight and comment on different aspects of frequency - for example, the most common colour words in English in order of frequency, and a comparison of male words (e.g. man) and female words (e.g. woman) in terms of their frequency.

Corpus Linguistics by the Lune: A Festschrift for Geoffrey Leech: v. 8

Corpus Linguistics by the Lune: A Festschrift for Geoffrey Leech: v. 8 (Trade Paperback / Paperback, Annotated edition)

Edited by Melia, Patrick James; Wilson, Andrew; Rayson, Paul; McEnery, Tony; Lewandowska-Tomaszcyk, Barbara

Geoffrey Leech is one of the pioneers of modern computer corpus linguistics. This Festschrift contains contributions from colleagues around the world who have been influenced, in various ways, by the approaches to language and text which Geoff pioneered. Many of the contributions... focus (both synchronically and diachronically) on the English language, which has been Geoff's main interest throughout his career. However, work on Polish, French, Biblical Greek, and Creole studies is also reported, which demonstrates the influence that Geoff has had on scholars outside of English linguistics. The papers in this book - all given at the Corpus Linguistics 2001 conference held in Geoff's honour - cover a wide range of topics and applications within corpus linguistics, including corpus building and annotation, lexicology, syntax, sociolinguistics, stylistics and pragmatics.

This book showcases sixteen papers from the landmark 30th conference of the International Computer Archive of Modern and Medieval English (ICAME) held at Lancaster University in May 2009. The theme of the book 'looking back, moving forward' follows that of the conference where pa...rticipants reflected on the extraordinary growth of corpus linguistics over three decades as well as looking ahead to yet further developments in the future. A separate volume, appearing as an e-publication in the VARIENG series from the University of Helsinki focuses on the methodological and historical dimensions of corpus linguistics. This volume features papers on present-day English and the recent history of English via the increasing availability of corpora covering the last hundred years or so of the language. Contributors to the volume study numerous topics and datasets including recent diachronic change, regional and new Englishes, learner corpora, Academic written English, parallel and translation corpora, corpora of popular music pop lyrics and computer-mediated communication. Overall the volume represents the state of the art in English corpus linguistics and a peek into the future directions for the field.
