Alan Brown was born in Alton, Illinois. After attending Millikin Univeristy, Southern Illinois University and the University of Illinois, he taught high school in Springfield, Illinois. In 1986, he began teaching English at the University of West Alabama. After living in Mississi...ppi for a year, Brown became interested in the folklore of the South and began collecting it on his own. People talk in the Midwest, Brown said, but not like they do in the South. I guess this is why southerners are great storytellers. When he is not teaching freshman composition or American literature, Dr. Brown writes books on his favorite topic: ghost stories. Haunted Vicksburg is his eleventh collection of southern ghost tales. As much as he loves old stories that send shivers up the spine, Brown's first love is his wife, Marilyn, and his two daughters, Andrea and Vanessa.

Throughout the Southwest, ghostly fiends and tragic figures creep in the shadows of some of the most popular and historic spots. Phantom battle cries ring across the wide prairie, spectral forms mark mountain passages and the chilled desert night is made even colder by the ghostl...y visits of those lost on the wild and unpredictable frontier. Departed inmates of Yuma s territorial prison carry on their eternal incarceration, and the unnerving laughter of children echoes through the vacant halls of White Sanitarium in Wichita Falls. The languid spirit of a former owner wanders the winding corridors of the Albuquerque Press Club. Glasses float past waiters at the Melting Pot in Littleton, and passengers at Union Station in Ogden encounter the victims of the Bagley Train Disaster of 1944. Join author Alan Brown as he recounts these and more supernatural stories of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Utah.

Sumter County was founded on December 18, 1832, on land ceded to the United States by the Choctaw Indians in the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek. Almost immediately, settlers began pouring in from Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas. In the 19th and early-20th centurie...s, most of the residents were farmers; however, following the infestation of the boll weevil, many turned to raising cattle and growing timber. Every November, hundreds of hunters descend upon Sumter County in hopes of harvesting one of the thousands of deer that live on the rolling prairies and in the oak forests lining the Tombigbee River. With the help of Ruby Pickens Tartt, scores of ethnomusicologists, including John and Alan Lomax, traveled hundreds of miles to the red clay country of Sumter County in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s to record African American folk songs from people like Vera Hall and Dock Reed.
