Societies have sought to improve the outputs of their agricultural producers for thousands of years. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, efforts to convey agricultural knowledge to farmers became known as extension services, a term adopted from programs at Oxford and Cambridge ...designed to extend the knowledge generated at universities to surrounding communities. Traditionally, extension services have emphasized a top-down model of technology transfer that encourages and teaches producers to use crop and livestock varieties and agricultural practices that will increase food production. More recently, extension services have moved toward a facilitation model, in which extension agents work with producers to identify their needs and the best sources of expertise to help meet those needs. On May 1, 2012, the Roundtable on Science, Technology, and Peacebuilding held a workshop in Washington, DC, to explore whether and how extension activities could serve peacebuilding purposes. The Roundtable is a partnership between the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP). It consists of senior executives and experts from leading governmental organizations, universities, corporations, and nongovernmental organizations, was established in 2011 to make a measurable and positive impact on conflict management, peacebuilding, and security capabilities. Its principal goals are: To accelerate the application of science and technology to the process of peacebuilding and stabilization; To promote systematic, high-level communication between peacebuilding and technical organizations on the problems faced and the technical capabilities required for successful peacebuilding; and To collaborate in applying new science and technology to the most pressing challenges for local and international peacebuilders working in conflict zones.

It all started one rainy Sunday afternoon back in the autumn of 2007. The doorbell rang and my Church Elder, looking rather windswept, handed me a copy of the Blackbraes and Shieldhill Church of Scotland Magazine. She happened to mention how great it would be if more people would... put a little article in, even if it was only a few words about themselves and their faith. It was then that I realised that I had never thought to explore or write about the times that God has influenced me, touched me and often rescued me with infinite patience and a sense of humour thrown in. I promised her I would write a small story about my faith for the next magazine. After the magazine finally came out, as we all enjoyed our tea and coffee after the service, a lady came over to my table in a very determined manner, holding a copy of the magazine with an extremely serious look on her face. I thought, Oops... she's going to tell me, 'Don't even think about writing any more articles, thank you!' But when she did arrive, what she said touched my heart. She told me she had been moved to tears by what I had written and it had really touched her and made her day. I felt so thrilled and at the same time so humbled. I have now had the pleasure of writing and submitting articles for the last twelve years. Finally, my minister and a few people from the congregation suggested I should put all the stories together into the form of a book which became Andrew's View and was published in 2015. A second book called Andrew's View Volume 2 Always with God was published in 2017. Since then, I have had many requests from people to release another book and I have had great pleasure compiling more of the stories into this third volume.

The Common Law of Obligations: Divergence and Unity

The development of the law of obligations across the common law world has been, and continues to be, a story of unity and divergence. Its common origins continue to exert a powerful stabilising influence, carried forward by a methodology that places heavy weight on the historical... foundations of legal principles. Divergence is, however, produced by numerous factors, including national and international human rights instruments, local statutory regimes, civil law influences, regional harmonisation, local circumstances and values and different political and legal cultures. The essays in this collection explore the forces that produce divergence, the countervailing forces that generate cohesion and consistency in the common law of obligations, and the influence that the major common law jurisdictions continue to exert over one another in this area of law. The chapters in this book were originally presented at the Seventh Biennial Conference on the Law of Obligations held in Hong Kong in July 2014. A second collection, entitled Divergences in Private Law (ISBN: 9781782256601), will focus on particular departures from the common law mainstream and the causes and effects of those deviations.

The development of private law across the common law world is typically portrayed as a series of incremental steps, each one delivered as a result of judges dealing with marginally different factual circumstances presented to them for determination. This is said to be the common ...law method. According to this process, change might be assumed to be gradual, almost imperceptible. If this were true, however, then even Darwinian-style evolution - death of the dinosaurs or development of flight - would seem unlikely in the law, and radical and revolutionary paradigms shifts perhaps impossible. And yet the history of the common law is to the contrary. The legal landscape is littered with quite remarkable revolutionary and evolutionary changes in the shape of the common law. The essays in this volume explore some of the highlights in this fascinating revolutionary and evolutionary development of the common law. The authors expose the nature of the changes undergone and their significance for the future direction of travel. They identify the circumstances and the contexts which might have provided an impetus for these significant changes. The essays range across all areas of private law, including contract, tort, unjust enrichment and property. No area has been immune from development. That fact itself is unsurprising, but an extended examination of the particular circumstances and contexts which delivered some of private law's most important developments has its own special significance for what it might indicate about the shape, and the shaping, of private law regimes in the future.

A collection of essays that focuses on one of the most hotly contested issues in private law scholarship: the function and purposes of private law. It asks whether private law can legitimately pursue external goals and analyses what goals private law might be said to pursue.
