Unlike the women of most warm races, those of Hawaii age well and nobly. With no pretence of make-up or cunning concealment of time's inroads, the woman who sat under the hau tree might have been permitted as much as fifty years by a judge competent anywhere over the world save i...n Hawaii. Yet her children and her grandchildren, and Roscoe Scandwell who had been her husband for forty years, knew that she was sixty-four and would be sixty-five come the next twenty-second day of June. But she did not look it, despite the fact that she thrust reading glasses on her nose as she read her magazine and took them off when her gaze desired to wander in the direction of the half-dozen children playing on the lawn.

It was a warm, golden-cloudy, lovable afternoon. In the big living-room at Ingleside Susan Baker sat down with a certain grim satisfaction hovering about her like an aura; it was four o'clock and Susan, who had been working incessantly since six that morning, felt that she had fa...irly earned an hour of repose and gossip. Susan just then was perfectly happy; everything had gone almost uncannily well in the kitchen that day. Dr. Jekyll had not been Mr. Hyde and so had not grated on her nerves; from where she sat she could see the pride of her heart-the bed of peonies of her own planting and culture, blooming as no other peony plot in Glen St.

The art of instruction does not come from the act of verbally spilling out obtained knowledge, hoping that someone will catch enough to impact them in some way. Learning, in the same sense, can not be truly obtained through passive actions. To truly instruct and learn, those invo...lved must be engaged and stimulated by what surrounds them and engrossed in the task at hand. An understanding and trust must be developed between an instructor and student so there is a level of teacher/learner in one hand and a feeling of mutual respect in the other. Poetry is one of the most simplistic, but yet complex, expressions of instruction and learning. On the surface it appears as if one only needs a pencil, a paper, and a direction to take their thoughts with poetry. But if one delves deeper, you find that there is a much more complicated world. An instructor must be able to create an environment where students feel safe to express their feelings and reveal parts of their lives to those around them. Thoughts, emotions and actions may be expressed through poetry that students have never shared with others. Vulnerability, toughness, hope and despair can all be intertwined into an expression of one's self through minimal use of the written word. If an instructor and students can become absorbed in the process, something magical can result from their efforts. ~~ ~~ The ability to organize one's thoughts, harness the emotions, and simplify the expression into a few words is no easy task at all. The confidence to share that task takes even more courage as it reveals a piece of each author. In the following, you will find poetry written by the 6th graders at Fairfield Middle School. It is the hope of the students and instructor that you find as many magical moments reading their poetry as they did creating the pieces found in this book.

An insatiable cook and traveler, Gloria Preston Olson has now written an unprecedented tome of approximately 600 ethnic recipes which reveal her palate of exquisite sensitivity and taste buds of discriminating discernment. The lucid instructions and comprehensive information on f...oods, wines, cooking equipment, and techniques make GLOBAL CULINARY ADVENTURES a truly remarkable cookbook. This comprehensive collection of recipes is arranged geographically, providing insight to the historical relationships of the foods of the entire world. Each chapter introduces the reader to the countries whose recipes are included; thus, it is also a must for the armchair traveler and those with an intellectual curiosity of the world. Extensive head notes reveal the Herculean and sometimes tumultuous adventures endured during Gloria's quest for culinary knowledge. They include a close call with Rwanda's Hutus and Tutsis which resulted in meeting Boutros Boutros-Ghali in an elevator; arriving in Kabul on the eve of the Communist coup; and Gloria's most memorable experience- a personal visit to the Shilat caviar processing site on the Caspian Sea in Iran, where she observed the entire production of caviar, followed by an invitation to partake of all five types of caviar, as well as lunch with five Shilat executives.

The Benson brothers have put together not only a fine book of poems well worth keeping close but also a strong testament of faith in those subtleties of blood that can elevate the ordinary into song. -Gary Gildner, winner of the Iowa Poetry Prize, Pushcart Prize, etc.; author of ...two novels, a collection of short stories, two memoirs, and nine books of poetry, including Cleaning a Rainbow, his most recent. This is what poetry was meant to be, neither overly-sentimental nor veiled in obscure imagery. The poems read like music you have discovered as you search across the radio dial. Once found you stay tuned, turning the pages for more. This is adult poetry with risky passion, psychological pain, sensual thirst and the ache of longing. There are no forced inventions or over-clever literary devices. In fact, you are rarely aware of the writer, only the emotional landscape that unfolds with each line. The writing has a quality found in Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past - an old picket fence, the ruts in a lane. The sun doesn't merely shine on a meadow, but rather is This July-fireball afternoon in a pasture . . . When an alcoholic, frail father irritatedly boots an empty paint can towards his sons it becomes the tumbling, end-over-end kick-off of an imagined football game, the boys waiting underneath it to return the shiny offering. I find the value of any poem is increased or diminished in the sharing. The sharing of these poems, I can attest, stokes the delight and interest of another. SCHOOLED LIVES: Poems by Two Brothers is a gift Barry and Steve Benson have placed in our hands. -John Gaps III, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, author of God Left Us Alone Here: A Book of War (poems and combat photographs). Who says a book of poems need be the domain of a singular poet and aesthetic? With Schooled Lives by accomplished poets and brothers Steve and Barry Benson, you get double the perspectives, imagery and deft language about life in the unruly, rural Midwest a
