In the fields of biologically active materials and functional materials, fluorinated organic materials are becoming a focus of significant interest. Over the past decade synthetic methodologies and reagents in fluorine chemistry have been developed, especially stereocontrolled sy...nthetic methods, enzymatic resolution to synthesize enantiomers, fluoromethylated reagents, and fluorination reagents. These methods have contributed to the opening of new pathways for fluorinated materials. However, few fluorinated materials have been put to commercial use. Furthermore, there remain problems to be solved, such as the handling of the materials, availability of reagents and selectivity (stereo-, regio-, and/or chemoselectivity). Research chemists, technical engineers, and graduate students in all branches of chemistry, pharmaceutics, and material science interested in fluorinated materials need to know detailed experimental procedures of how to synthesize the target fluorinated materials. This volume summarizes the chemical and microbial methods for obtaining functionalized fluorinated materials for use as building blocks; detailed experimental methods (reaction conditions, solvent, temperature, handling techniques, etc.); and the stereoview (possible absolute configuration) of the structures with spectral data. Mono-, di-, tri-, and polyfluorinated materials derived from fluorinating agents, fluoromethylated reagents and building blocks are summarized. A chemical name index, molecular formula index, and reagent index are also included. The publication of this monograph will provide access to the enormous possibilities in fluorine chemistry, biological material chemistry, and functionalized material chemistry.

Computational Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry is a textbook aimed at inorganic, bioinorganic and organometallic chemists who have an interest in computation, but limited experience and confidence in applying computational techniques. Presenting focused information on compu...tational methods of specific relevance to inorganic chemistry in an easily accessible form, this textbook adopts the structure of a mainstream inorganic chemistry textbook but from a computational point of view, providing theoretical background and know-how. It is self-contained in terms of theoretical and computational chemistry, with a focus on examining how computation can contribute to inorganic chemistry. The book covers all aspects of inorganic chemistry, including main group inorganic compounds, coordination complexes, solids and materials, supramolecular species, and bioinorganic compounds. For each class of species, appropriate computational methods to describe their properties are introduced, including molecular mechanical and quantum mechanical techniques, as well as methods to describe spectroscopic properties and reactivity. Numerous case-studies are included throughout the textbook, highlighting applications of computational methods to particular inorganic compounds, with references to the primary literature. Topics discussed include bonding in diborane B2H6, accurate measurement and computation of the energy of the hydrogen molecule, substituent effects for phosphine ligands, Wade's rules, and ligand binding to hemoglobin. Software agnostic problems and exercises are also included, with answers provided on a companion website.

The chemistry of metals has traditionally been more understood than that of its oxides. As catalytic applications continue to grow in a variety of disciplines, Metal Oxides: Chemistry and Applications offers a timely account of transition-metal oxides (TMO), one of the most impor...tant classes of metal oxides, in the context of catalysis. The first part of the book examines the crystal and electronic structure, stoichiometry and composition, redox properties, acid-base character, and cation valence states, as well as new approaches to the preparation of ordered TMO with extended structure of texturally defined systems. The second part compiles some practical aspects of TMO applications in materials science, chemical sensing, analytical chemistry, solid-state chemistry, microelectronics, nanotechnology, environmental decontamination, and fuel cells. The book examines many types of reactions - such as dehydration, reduction, selective oxidations, olefin metathesis, VOC removal, photo- and electrocatalysis, and water splitting - to elucidate how chemical composition and optical, magnetic, and structural properties of oxides affect their surface reactivity in catalysis. Drawing insight from leading international experts, Metal Oxides: Chemistry and Applications is a comprehensive and interdisciplinary reference for researchers that may also be used by newcomers as a guide to the field.
