At a time when two-thirds of American high school students are not proficient in math, this book comes to the rescue of math-phobes of all ages. Whether you are a college student struggling to fulfill a math requirement or a professional in a field requiring high-level analytic s...kills, A Mind for Numbers is geared toward anyone who has ever been intimidated by math. Barbara Oakley, a successful engineering professor who once flunked her way through high school math and science classes, understands this audience well. Offering insights in neuroscience and cognitive psychology, Dr. Oakley teaches us how to fully utilize the right side of the brain (for creative, big-picture thinking), as well as the analytical left side (for problem solving). She addresses common stumbling blocks to approaching math and science, and shows us how to use our personal learning style to its fullest advantage.

Strange Curves, Counting Rabbits, & Other Mathematical Explorations (EPUB ebook – Course Book)

            By Ball, Keith

How does mathematics enable us to send pictures from space back to Earth? Where does the bell-shaped curve come from? Drawing on areas of mathematics from probability theory, number theory, and geometry, this work highlights how ideas, mostly from pure math, can answer these ques...tions. It includes puzzles and problems of varying difficulty.

            Mathematical Methods in Elasticity Imaging

Mathematical Methods in Elasticity Imaging (EPUB ebook)

By Ammari, Habib; Bretin, Elie; Garnier, Josselin; Kang, Hyeonbae; Lee, Hyundae

This book is the first to comprehensively explore elasticity imaging and examines recent, important developments in asymptotic imaging, modeling, and analysis of deterministic and stochastic elastic wave propagation phenomena. It derives the best possible functional images for sm...all inclusions and cracks within the context of stability and resolution, and introduces a topological derivative-based imaging framework for detecting elastic inclusions in the time-harmonic regime. For imaging extended elastic inclusions, accurate optimal control methodologies are designed and the effects of uncertainties of the geometric or physical parameters on stability and resolution properties are evaluated. In particular, the book shows how localized damage to a mechanical structure affects its dynamic characteristics, and how measured eigenparameters are linked to elastic inclusion or crack location, orientation, and size. Demonstrating a novel method for identifying, locating, and estimating inclusions and cracks in elastic structures, the book opens possibilities for a mathematical and numerical framework for elasticity imaging of nanoparticles and cellular structures.

            By Havil, Julian

Math - the application of reasonable logic to reasonable assumptions - usually produces reasonable results. But sometimes math generates astonishing paradoxes - conclusions that seem completely unreasonable or just plain impossible but that are nevertheless demonstrably true. Thi...s is a collection of paradoxes from many different areas of math.
