The night of 16 May, 1943. Nineteen specially adapted Lancaster bombers take off from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, each with a huge 9000lb cylindrical bomb strapped underneath it. Their mission: to destroy three dams deep within the German heartland, which provide the lifeblood ...to the industries supplying the Third Reich's war machine. From the outset it was an almost impossible task, a suicide mission: to fly low and at night in formation over many miles of enemy-occupied territory at the very limit of the Lancasters' capacity, and drop a new weapon that had never been tried operationally before from a precise height of just sixty feet from the water at some of the most heavily defended targets in Germany. More than that, the entire operation had to be put together in less than ten weeks. When visionary aviation engineer Barnes Wallis's concept of the bouncing bomb was green lighted, he hadn't even drawn up his plans for the weapon that was to smash the dams. What followed was an incredible race against time, which, despite numerous setbacks and against huge odds, became one of the most successful and game-changing bombing raids of all time.

Precious Metal: Classic Fighters in New Zealand

Precious Metal: Classic Fighters in New Zealand (Hardback)

            Photographs by Conroy, Gavin

The popularity of the fighter aircraft used in World War II is huge in New Zealand, as evidenced by the enormous crowds that turn up for events such as Warbirds over Wanaka - over 80,000 people attended the 2010 event. New Zealand is extremely lucky that there are a wide range of... airworthy WW II-era classic fighters remaining in the country, the subject of this superb new book of aviation photography. Author Gavin Conroy has had unparalleled access to New Zealand's classic fighters, and specialises in close-up air-to-air photography, which captures so much of the character and appeal of these extraordinary machines. Included in the book are all of the important aircraft flying in New Zealand. Included are the Supermarine Spitfire, the P-51D Mustang, the P-40 Kittyhawk, the FG-1D Corsair, the Hawker Hurricane, the P-40B Tomahawk, the Yak 3, the Lavochkin La-9, and importantly Germany's great fighter, the Focke Wulf 190. For all of the fifteen aircraft featured, there is a short, but informative text. A high-quality, comprehensive book on photographs of classic fighters has never been produced in New Zealand before, and it is certain that this book will find its way onto the bookshelves of the thousands of passionate warbird enthusiasts.

In November 1943, with the outcome of the Second World War hanging in the balance, the Allies needed a new plan. The Americans' audacious suggestion to the Soviets was to open a second air front, with the US Air Force establishing bases in Soviet-controlled territory. Despite Sta...lin's obvious reservations about the presence of foreign troops in Russia, he was persuaded, and in early 1944 and Operation Baseball and then Frantic were initiated as B-17 Superfortresses were flown from bases in Italy to the Poltova region in today's Ukraine. Award-winning historian Serhii Plokhy tells the gripping, little-known story of this encounter between American and Soviet soldiers and how their collaboration quickly fell apart, mirroring the transition from the Grand Alliance to the Cold War. Soviet secret policemen watched over the Americans, shadowing their every move. A catastrophic air raid by the Germans revealed the limitations of Soviet air defences. As their initial enthusiasm turned into disappointment, the American soldiers started calling themselves the Forgotten Bastards of Ukraine. Ultimately, no common purpose could overcome their cultural and political differences. Drawing on newly opened Russian archives as well as CIA records, Forgotten Bastards of the Eastern Front offers a riveting bottom-up history one of the Second World War's most unlikely alliances.

Popularly referred to as the 'Viper' by its air and ground crews, the F-16 is a successful American-built all-weather multi-role jet fighter of which more than 4,500 have been built and exported to 25 countries worldwide. Author Steve Davies covers all aspects of the F-16, focusi...ng specifically on the design and construction of the Block 40/50 F-16C/D version. He also gives coverage of the Viper's impressive combat record in both Gulf Wars, in Afghanistan and over the Balkans, as well as in the Israeli pre-emptive strike in 1981 on the Osirak reactor in Iraq.
