Urban communities around the world face increased stress from natural disasters linked to climate change, and other urban pressures. They need to grow rapidly stronger in order to cope, adapt and flourish. Strong social networks and social cohesion can be more important for a com...munity's resilience than the actual physical structures of a city. But how can urban planning and design support these critical collective social strengths? This book offers blue sky thinking from the applied social and behavioural sciences, and urban planning. It looks at case studies from 14 countries around the world - including India, the USA, South Africa, Indonesia, the UK and New Zealand - focusing on initiatives for housing, public space and transport stops, and also natural disasters such as flooding and earthquakes. Building on these insights, the authors propose a 'gold standard': a socially aware planning process and policy recommendation for those drawing up city sustainability and climate change resilience strategies, and urban developers looking to build climate-proof infrastructure and spaces. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of urban studies, resilience studies and climate change policy, as well as policymakers and practitioners working in related fields.

This irresistibly disgusting book for children will teach you all you need to know about all kinds of animal dung and human waste - what it's for, how it's made, where it goes, and lots more! Poo comes in all shapes and sizes. Every animal has its own special sort and some have f...ascinating uses for it. Wombats use their cube-shaped droppings to mark their territory; potato beetles build a shield of dung for defence; male hippos spray out a faecal shower to attract mates; and rabbits and dung beetles eat their pellets for extra nutrition. We might call it waste but in fact, poo is among the most useful stuff on Earth. From building materials and paper to coffee and even water purification, there's a multitude of manure-based matter in our lives. This unique book is jam-packed with scientific explanations and amazing trivia about human and animal deposits. Did you know, for example, that the global population produces more than a million tonnes of poo every day? Or that the ancient Egyptians used animal excrement in their medicine? That wars have been fought over guano? All these facts and more are presented, either with jaw-dropping CGI illustrations or eye-popping photography. Additional boxes feature infographics that make information easy to understand. With endlessly interesting information and incredible visuals, It Can't Be True! Poo is the perfect way to entertain and amuse your friends, family, and yourself. In fact, you'll never look at poo in the same way again!

Fundamentals of Hydrology provides an absorbing and comprehensive introduction to the understanding of how fresh water moves on and around the planet and how humans affect and manage the freshwater resources available to them. The book consists of three parts, each of fundamental... importance in the understanding of hydrology: * The first section deals with processes within the hydrological cycle, our understanding of them, and how to measure and estimate the amount of water within each process. This also includes an analysis of how each process impacts upon water quality issues. * The second section is concerned with the measurement and analytical assessment of important hydrological parameters such as streamflow and water quality. It describes analytical and modelling techniques used by practising hydrologists in the assessment of water resources. * The final section of the book draws together the first two parts to discuss the management of freshwater with respect to both water quality and quantity in a changing world. Fundamentals of Hydrology is a lively and accessible introduction to the study of hydrology at university level. It gives undergraduates a thorough understanding of hydrological processes, knowledge of the techniques used to assess water resources and an up-to-date overview of water resource management. Throughout the text examples and case studies from all around the world are used to clearly explain ideas and techniques. Short chapter summaries, essay questions, guides to further reading, website links and a glossary are also included. The third edition provides new and updated case study material and includes a new chapter on measuring streamflow. This chapter has particular reference to recent technological advances in this field and the challenges in maintaining a high quality river flow data set.

In 1872 Yellowstone was established as a National Park. The name caught the public's imagination and by the close of the century, other National Parks had been declared, not only in the USA, but also in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Yet as it has spread, the concept has evo...lved and diversified. In the absence of any international controlling body, individual countries have been free to adapt the concept for their own physical, social and economic environments. Some have established national parks to protect scenery, others to protect ecosystems or wildlife. Tourism has also been a fundamental component of the national parks concept from the beginning and predates ecological justifications for national park establishment though it has been closely related to landscape conservation rationales at the outset. Approaches to tourism and visitor management have varied. Some have stripped their parks of signs of human settlement, while increasingly others are blending natural and cultural heritage, and reflecting national identities. This edited volume explores in detail, the origins and multiple meanings of National Parks and their relationship to tourism in a variety of national contexts. It consists of a series of introductory overview chapters followed by case study chapters from around the world including insights from the US, Canada, Australia, UK, Spain, France, Sweden, Indonesia, China and Southern Africa. Taking a global comparative approach, this book examines how and why national parks have spread and evolved, how they have been fashioned and used, and the integral role of tourism within national parks. The volume's focus on the long standing connection between tourism and national parks; and the changing concept of national parks over time and space give the book a distinct niche in the national parks and tourism literature. The volume is expected to contribute not only to tourism and national park studies at the upper level undergraduate and graduate leve
