Advances in high spatial resolution mapping capabilities and the new rules established by the Federal Aviation Administration for the operation of Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) have provided new opportunities to acquire aerial data at a lower cost and more safely versus ...other methods. Also, sUAS can access hazardous or inaccessible areas during disaster events and provide rapid response when needed. Applications of Small Unmanned Aircraft systems: Best Practices and Case Studies is the first book that brings together the best practices of sUAS applied to a broad range of issues in high spatial resolution mapping projects. Very few in the sUAS pilot community have knowledge of how the collected imagery is processed into value added mapping products that have commercial and/or academic import. Since the field of sUAS applications is just a few years old, this book covers the need for a compendium of case studies to guide the planning, data collection, and most importantly, data processing, with the range of sensors available to this user community. Written by experienced academics and professionals, this book serves as a guide on how to formulate sUAS based projects, from choice of a sUAS, flight planning for a particular application, sensors and data acquisition, data processing software, mapping software and use of the high spatial resolution maps produced for particular types of geospatial modeling. Features: Focus on sUAS based data acquisition and processing into map products Broad range of case studies by highly experienced academics Practical guidance on sUAS hardware, sensors, and software utilized Compilation of workflow insights from expert professors and professionals Relevant to academia, government, and industry This book would be an excellent text for upper-level undergraduate to graduate level sUAS mapping application courses. It is also invaluable as a reference for educators designing sUAS based curriculum as well as for potential sUAS users

This book is a political economic analysis of China's transformation to become a global aviation power. It explores how China's policy goal has been achieved and executed through bilateral air services negotiations and how and to what extent the factors have affected the consider...ations and negotiation outcome. The book aims to identify the driving forces that have shaped China's ever-evolving international air transport policy direction and goals in the past four decades. Using primary data collected from dozens of interviewees and secondary data from various sources, the study examines the time-associated factors and circumstances surrounding a handful rounds of bilateral negotiations between China and its selective counterparts. It further analyses how and to what extent the identified factors have affected China's negotiation strategies and outcome. It argues that China's international air transport policy direction is in alignment with the country's overall strategic mission and its goal is set to support the country's endeavour to realise the China dream . It concludes that driving forces at international, regional, domestic and institutional levels have an impact on the country's policy direction and goal setting, although these factors are time- and circumstances-constrained. The book is a must read for a wide audience, including but not limited to industry professionals and scholars with an interest in China's political economy, policymaking, international trade, air transport, government behaviour, corporate political activities, aviation liberalisation, and bilateral negotiations.

This book provides a general introduction into aviation operations, covering all the relevant elements of this field and the interrelations between them. Numerous books have been written about aviation, but most are written by and for specialists and assume a profound understandi...ng of the fundamentals. This textbook provides the basics for understanding these fundamentals. This book explains how the commercial aviation sector is structured, and how technological, economic and political forces define its development and the prosperity of its players. Aviation Operations have become an important field of expertise. Airlines, airports and aviation suppliers, the players in aviation, need expertise on how aircraft are profitably exploited by connecting airports with the aim to add value to society. This book covers all relevant aspects on how they all do this, including contemporary challenges like capacity constraints and sustainability. This textbook delivers a fundamental basic understanding of the commercial aviation sector at a level ideal for first-year university students but also appropriate and accessible to people already employed within aviation seeking an accurate overview of operations.

With the extraordinary growth of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in research, military, and commercial contexts, there has been a need for a reference that provides a comprehensive look at the latest research in the area. Filling this void, Smart Autonomous Aircraft: Flight Contro...l and Planning for UAV introduces the advanced methods of flight control, planning, situation awareness, and decision making. This book is among the first to emphasize the theoretic and algorithmic side of control and planning in dynamic and uncertain environments. Focused on the latest theory that informs flight planning and control, it describes the use of computational intelligence modeling, control, and planning. Providing background information on fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles, the book proceeds from the basics to advanced methods, from classical to the most innovative. It examines the current state of the art and covers the topics required to assess the autonomy of UAVs. An ideal resource for researchers and practitioners working on solutions for implementing advanced capabilities in UAVs, the book details the mathematical underpinnings of each concept and includes illustrative case studies to reinforce understanding. Providing an interdisciplinary point of view on autonomous aircraft, the book reviews the different methodologies of control and planning used to create smart autonomous aircraft. The topics covered in this book have been derived from the author's research and teaching duties in smart aerospace and autonomous systems and from literature survey. Assuming an understanding of engineering at the undergraduate level, this book is suitable for advanced-level graduate students and PhD students enrolled in UAV or aerial robotics courses.
