Not just an ambitious restoration of a fascinating unseen archive; but a book that takes on the gargantuan task of shifting the collective memory around key moments in British youth culture history with a mesmerizing force of honesty and humanity. By the man who's previous books ...Skins (1994), and Skins & Punks (2008), have been hailed as modern classics, Damiani is pleased to announce the latest Gavin Watson monograph titled Oh the Fun We Had! Appropriating the Madness lyrics as an anthem of its times, this intimate selection of photography disrupts the notion of skinheads and council estate residents as problematic figures in an almost endearing manner while still preserving the subversive character of the cult of youth. At an undisputed time of little optimism, Oh the Fun We Had! is a very important fly-on-the-wall testimonial and reminder that no matter how difficult life is; so it shall also be Fun... At least when captured from the right angle.

A young woman with her legs spread wide; buttoned-up dressed workers on a city street. Contrasting photos like these of intensely private scenes, and snapshots of nameless passers-by are Nobuyoshi Araki's early commentary on the heterogeneity of Japanese society, calling the mora...l responsibility of its members into question. This book combines Araki's Tokyo series from his early works with a selection of his recent Polaroid collages and newly developed slide shows-all of them exploring the contradictions between anonymity and intimacy, the public and private sphere, reality and dream. The legendary Araki is one of the most influential and widely discussed artists today, one who deals with nakedness, sexuality and the body in a radical and realistic way. Through an extreme emotional and physical closeness with his subjects, he becomes not only part of their lives but plays a central role in his own photos, thus transcending voyeurism. Together with Nan Goldin, Larry Clark and Boris Mikhailov, Araki is considered one of the pioneers of intimate subjective photography. Art is all about doing what you shouldn't. Nobuyoshi Araki Co-published with C/O Berlin Exhibition: C/O Berlin, 8 December 2018 to 3 March 2019

Robert Polidori (born 1951) has been making books at Steidl for over 18 years now, and for many of his visits he lodged in an apartment adjacent to the publishing house. To the left of this, at D stere Stra e 6, stands a small humble house, not only the oldest dwelling in G tting...en but, dating back to 1310, one of the oldest half-timbered houses in all of Germany. Miraculously never demolished over the centuries (just altered, repaired and patched up), it has now been restored by Gerhard Steidl and today houses the G nter Grass Archive, part of the University of G ttingen. Topographical Histories presents Polidori's 2016 photos of the interior walls of the building, whose glorious crumbling layers--14th-century structures of wattle and daub, clay bricks and plaster, and remnants of paint and wallpaper from different centuries--bear witness to living history. Polidori focuses on the subtle colorations, depth and complexity of these surfaces, creating an unconventional, painterly architectural portrait.
