What's the difference, if anything, between wireless and radio? The early wireless experiments achieved remarkable results but did not use radio waves. It wasn't until Heinrich Hertz performed his famous experiment in 1888 that the existence of the electromagnetic spectrum was co...nfirmed and radio (or wireless), as we know it today, became possible. "From Wireless to Radio: Bridging the Gap" repeats some of the early wireless and radio experiments using modern, low-power components. As the book progresses, the theory and history behind them is explored. The experiments involve a limited amount of circuit construction and allow enthusiasts aged thirteen and above to share the sense of achievement experienced originally by the wireless pioneers of old. Voice communications can be established across the kitchen, garden or school playing field using simple circuits running off nine volt batteries. No licence is needed as no radio waves are transmitted. The wheel has now come full circle and the term wireless is used to describe almost any means of communication without wires. "Wireless" systems from door-bells to computer interfaces are all around us. This book provides an insight into how these modern systems work

Playing footsie with the FTSE? The financial crash of 2008 and the crisis in journalism is a special book issue of Ethical Space to mark a special event. In the autumn of 2008, the world economy nearly went into meltdown after the collapse of Lehman Brothers on 15 September. The ...banks were on the brink; the cash machines worldwide were about to be shut off. In the end, the global economy was saved - but at a huge long-term cost. Why did so few politicians, economists and academics see the Great Crash coming and why did so few journalists report it in advance? Here the movers and shakers of financial journalism try to give some explanation: [ Robert Peston, of the BBC, then a maverick now proved to be totally right [ Peter Wilby, of the Guardian, who advises us not to trust financial journalists [ Jane Fuller, top financial analyst, ponders the implications for all journalists [ Anne Gregory, Professor of PR, examines the role of public relations in the credit crunch [ Award-winning Martin Lewis critiques the TV property porn merchants Other distinguished contributors include Hugh Pym, of the BBC, Pulitzer Prize-winner David Cay Johnston, INSEAD scholar Matthew Fraser, Francesco Guerrera, of the Financial Times, PR guru Trevor Morris, Alex Brummer, of the Daily Mail, Brian Caplen, editor of the Banker, Howard Davies, LSE Director, Nicholas Jones, for 30 years a BBC correspondent, top media blogger Kristine Lowe and Professors John Tulloch and Damian Tambini. Edited by John Mair, of Coventry University, and Richard Lance Keeble, of the University of Lincoln, this is a seminal collection of essays on the Great Crash from those at the epicentre of the financial storm. Very timely and topical, this is an extremely valuable collection of reflections from leading commentators on how the media covered the Great Crash of 2008 Professor Daya Thussu, University of Westminster, London

2007-2008 was the annus horribilis for the British media. All terrestrial broadcasters were found to have cheated their audiences through a variety of scams: Premium Rate Calling, fake competitions with results changed to suit the producers -- and more. As a result, public trust ...in the media dipped. Beyond Trust examines this crucial 'trust' issue with lively, opinionated and controversial contributions from a wide variety of experienced and distinguished media practitioners. It places the contemporary controversy in a historical context, examines the implications for local newspapers -- and explores the role media education can play in restoring trust. In addition: / Anthony Arblaster argues the case for scepticism / Dorothy Byrne claims: 'TV journalism is so fair it makes Andy Pandy look dodgy' / Charlie Beckett asks: 'Can we trust the internet?' THE EDITORS John Mair is a senior lecturer in journalism at Coventry University, a former producer and director for BBC, ITV and Channel Four. Richard Lance Keeble is professor of journalism at the University of Lincoln and joint editor of Ethical Space.

A most interesting series of documents recently came up for auction in Israel. I was privileged to be shown them and realised their importance in the history of Jewish Sunderland. During the Second World War (1939-1945) most of the Jewish youth both men and women were called up f...or military service. The minister at this time was Rabbi S Toperoff. He took it upon himself to edit and send a monthly bulletin to every Jewish service man and woman from Sunderland throughout the world containing local news and also letters from all so that everybody had some contact not only with home but also with each other. Rabbi Toperoff enlisted some local correspondents to help him. This unique collection is a full series and gives a most wonderful insight not only to the serving men and women but also to the local Jewish life in Sunderland during the War Years. Harold A Davis

Yoga. How and Why it Works

Enquiry. Deep questioning. Throughout my life I have seen very little evidence of this taking place. In my early life as an engineering apprentice at Rolls Royce I had so many questions. In my subsequent management jobs in industry I had so many questions. In the engineering busi...nesses that I started the questions begun to be answered. A few life traumas and then retraining in osteopathy and yoga and shortly after, tai chi, matched enquiry with answers. Over 25 years of yoga teaching, answers have come thick and fast. Treating over 6000 patients using my own patented therapy, full movement method, has produced a host of other questions and again lots of answers. What has been a source of astonishment and continues to provide a source of continuing amazement is how much factual information there is out there but how little understanding of how things work. Why do people assume that age brings infirmity when in many cultures it does not? Why do so few find any interest in protecting their health with the worlds most advanced system--yoga Why are so many people inappropriately labelled when they have pain? How is it that so many medical people are so astonishingly ignorant of the most simple solutions to ordinary bad backs? How can so many medical professionals be so utterly inadequate with normal people who are in pain? How can one spend 10 years learning and not know of the need to stretch a muscle when it is tight? How can yoga have found so few adherents? Where are the thinkers in the culture? Where are the wise people today? My fervent wish is that this book ends up in the hands of someone who is a thinker and has just not been able to find sufficient power in their own belief, to counter the force of opinion of someone who does not know that he does not know or, worse, is sure that he does know and is unaware of his own supreme ignorance.

Was it insanity or enlightenment on Mike's own road to Damascus? He was 40, a dispensing chemist, when he allowed himself and his psyche to be scrutinised by professionals. He describes his journey in raw human detail, free of the usual psychobabble. His experience is recounted w...ithout the trendy need to blame parents or Society. Michael Reynolds' view is positive. For him it was, and remains, a mindful experience of enlighenment. The author gained thinking space, allowing a quiet contemplation of life's purpose. This account may well raise questions for the reader, amongst them; What is normal?, How truthful are we with our own psyche?, How open are we to appraisal by others? I feel privileged to have read the original draft. A READER'S COMMENT 'Seeing the Light' is a saying that is commonly used, it means different things to different people. In this book, the author explains the details of what it means to him and the dramatic effect on his thinking as a result of experiencing it.

The provocative chapters making up this edited volume are drawn from a range of disciplines and are intended to help scholars, activists, students, and citizens in general to rethink commonly accepted notions of community in order to imagine new possibilities for social, politica...l, and economic organization -- in short, new ways of imagining solidarity and citizenship with others, especially those who languish outside the range of our moral radar. They demonstrate that the political philosophy of John Dewey remains important and heuristic for understanding and advancing contemporary discourses of participatory and deliberative democracy -- what the contributors explore collectively as a creative democracy. Graduate courses in communication, philosophy, rhetoric and composition, journalism, American studies, cultural studies, and many other areas in the humanities and social sciences can also draw on the historical, critical, and sociological aspects of the various chapters for debating the role of progressive social criticism in public life.
