From 1925 until his death in 1929 the Hamburg-based art and cultural scholar Aby Warburg worked on his Mnemosyne Atlas, a volume of plates that has, in the meanwhile, taken on mythical status in the study of modern art and visual studies. With this project, Warburg created a visu...al reference system that was far ahead of its time. Roberto Ohrt and Axel Heil have now undertaken the task of finding all of the individual pictures from the atlas and displaying these reproductions of artworks from the Middle East, European antiquity, and the Renaissance in the same way that Warburg himself showed them, on panels hung with black fabric. This folio volume and the exhibition in Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin succeed in restoring Warburg's vanished legacy-something that researchers have long considered impossible.

He was one of the last great court artists and at the same time a significant trailblazer for modern art: Francisco de Goya. The Fondation Beyeler is preparing one of the most extensive exhibitions of his work outside of Spain. In his more than sixty-year-long career, Goya was an... astute observer of the drama of reason and irrationality, of dreams and nightmares. His pictures show things that go beyond social conventions: he depicts saints and criminals, witches and demons, breaking open the gates to realms where the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur. The show gathers more than seventy paintings, around sixty masterful drawings, and a selection of prints that invite the viewer to an encounter with the beautiful, as well as the incomprehensible. The extensive catalogue examines Goya's unique artistic impact in texts by renowned interpreters, and splendid photo galleries.

Compiling columns of numbers on typewriter paper, Hanne Darboven (1941-2009) catalogued time. Probably the most important German Conceptual artist, Darboven added, cross-totaled, wrote down, recorded. In her hands, notated moments in time coalesced into works of art. This collage...-like biography focuses on a fascinatingly androgynous female figure, setting out on a search for the traces of her life. Born into an upper-class family in Hamburg, Darboven experienced her artistic awakening in New York in the 1960s and ultimately carved out a stellar career as an artist. Here, transcribed conversations, narrative passages and interviews with fellow artists such as Lawrence Weiner, Carl Andre, Joseph Kosuth, Kasper König and Rainer Langhans are interspersed with one another. This intimate perspective demonstrates Darboven's artistic development and enables readers to more easily access her influential oeuvre.

For more than forty years Nelly Rau-Haring wandered the streets of the city with her camera. She pursued her two great passions: her enthusiasm for photography and her curiosity about Berlin's residents. Along with her virtuoso eye for strongly expressive details, these things ma...ke her a special type of chronicler. She always narrates history through the small moments of everyday life, the atmosphere on the streets, and the energetic activities of the people. She traveled through both West and East Berlin, capturing contemporary life on film through faces, shop windows, and building panoramas. To celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Hatje Cantz is releasing this splendid photography book. It provides a comprehensive look at this photographic universe, whose pictures are the expression of personal devotion, as well as of historical significance.
