Applying event history models to data from the Spanish Family and Ferlity Survey, this book tries to provide an answer to the specific research question about whether all women forgo and/or delay motherhood in Spain as the result of better education and improved career opportunit...ies in recent decades, or whether women's demographic behavior differs depending on their education. The research shows that the level of education does not necessarily lead to abandon motherhood. As important as the level, is the type because the choice of a specific field of study is subject to individual preferences about a desired life style, in which women show a particular orientation towards family life, irrespective of their education level. More precisely, those studies concerned with the care of individuals and/or emphasizing interpersonal skills positively influence fertility in Spain. This book, therefore, demonstrates that as a growing proportion of women spend more years in education and their education attainment also increases, the role of qualitative variables such as the field of study becomes more relevant.

Nonsmooth optimization problems are generally considered to be more difficult than smooth problems. Yet, there is an important class of nonsmooth problems that lie in between. In this book, we consider the problem of minimizing the sum of a smooth function and a (block separable)... convex function with or without linear constraints. This problem includes as special cases bound-constrained optimization, smooth optimization with L_1-regularization, and linearly constrained smooth optimization such as a large-scale quadratic programming problem arising in the training of support vector machines. We propose a block coordinate gradient descent method for solving this class of structured nonsmooth problems. The method is simple, highly parallelizable, and suited for large-scale applications in signal/image denoising, regression, and data mining/classification. We establish global convergence and, under a local Lipschitzian error bound assumption, local linear rate of convergence for this method. Our numerical experiences suggest that our method is effective in practice. This book is helpful to the people who are interested in solving large-scale optimization problems.

In 1992 the Canadian government announced a moratorium on cod fishing in the Atlantic Maritime provinces, resulting in an upheaval of ways that were centered on the cod fishery for centuries. This research examines the social, economic and political history of two clusters of com...munities caught up in the crisis on coastal Labrador and on the island of Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula, and how they managed to adapt. This study focuses on the interrelatedness of social capital- in particular the characteristics of local social structures and civic culture - and how they impact community socioeconomic well-being. Data from participant observation and over 100 in-depth interviews with local leaders, fishers and citizens are supplemented with quanti--tative information from census, community and government records. The results show that when adjacent communities band together, the likelihood of accomplishing substantial development initiatives is much higher than if individual locales work separately. This account offers insight for those interested in community eco--nomic development, regionalization, and how resource-dependent areas handle significant environmental and economic change.

Self-Organization in Spontaneous Movements of Human Neonates

What are the principles that underlie the generation of spontaneous motor behaviour of human neonates? And what is the significance of these spontaneous movements? Fifty years ago, these questions would have been unusual for most scientists to ask because spontaneous limb movemen...ts of neonates were assumed to be of a reflexive nature and not of any significance for the development of motor regulation and cognition. Biologist Dr. Birte Asmann shows that a detailed analysis of these spontaneous movements provides evidence for processes of self-organization, which is of crucial significance in the development of complex behaviour in nonlinear systems. Principles of organization of neonatal limb kinematics reveal that the physical apparatus' processes of self-organization are continuous with those of higher cognitive functions. The framework of Dr. Asmann's analyses constitutes a dynamic approach to cognition: Emphasis is placed on the idea of an embodied cognitive system with self-organizing interactions of biomechanics, the nervous system and gravity as a first stage in forming higher organizational levels of abstraction.

One year changed a four decade long cohabitation between Europe's leading organizations, the EU and NATO. 1999 brought the Treaty of Amsterdam by which the EU for the first time upheld genuine security competencies. The same year, NATO's military intervention in the Kosovo crisis... not only shattered the superiority of the concept of state sovereignty, but also introduced the Alliance as a proactive orga--nization complementing its originally defined reactive and defensive character. Ever since, the two organizations enjoy a peculiar relation--ship as with the newly upheld features, they increasingly overlap in their competencies. This process for Europe's penetration into hard defence is paralleled with the ongoing progression of institutional change within the Union transforming it from an intergovernmental into an increasingly supranational organization. In addition, NATO's very own re-shifting from the reactive to a proactive mode of opera--tion further complicates the equation between the two organizations. This study examines the recent relationship between NATO and EU's European Security and Defence Policy, and the rationale for the dra--matic shift of course in their cooperation.

This work reports the findings of a study of the influences of organizational structures, cultures, pedagogies, and reward systems in a traditional university for their influences on faculty adoption of technology enhanced learning into teaching practice. The study was undertaken... in a research-oriented Canadian university. Eight case studies of faculty experiences in a five-year (2000-2005), government-funded, technology enhanced learning (TEL) initiative are reported. Participants\' perspectives of the influences of university policies and practices on the success of TEL initiatives are examined. The roles of instructional designers and media developers in supporting faculty in TEL development projects are explored. Project management models are discussed. Theoretical implications for organizational change in research-oriented universities to support faculty adoption of TEL are posited.

Michaela Koch explains the development of a new line of research in sociolinguistics called queer linguistics. Rooted in poststructuralist approaches to gender as a social construction, queer linguistics offers a critical framework for sociolinguistic analysis that values diversi...ty and avoids over-generalization and stereotyping. Koch describes the history of language and gender research from the 1920's up to today and analyzes different shifts of perspectives of research. Critically, she reflects the concept of performativity, which was originally introduced by J.L. Austin and reframed by Judith Butler into the concept of gender performativity in the 1990's. In addition to theoretical basics and methodology, this book introduces several model analyses and shows insistently the advantages of the queer linguistic framework. With its comprehensive overview of the development of language and gender research and its critical introduction to queer linguistics the book addresses linguistic scholars and students as well as scholars and students interested in gender studies. In Africa, many countries face various environmental problems such as air pollution, water pollution, low levels of sanitation, and solid waste issues. City populations of these countries have grown very fast because of migration toward cities. Ghana, especially Accra, is one of ...the cases in Africa. In Ghana, the government started privatizing solid waste collection during the mid-1990s. Since then, Accra has been served by both the public and private sectors even though these services are neither effective nor efficient. The purpose of this study is to investigate the individual attributes of the demand for solid waste collection in Accra. The data were collected using questionnaires to understand residents' characteristics of those affected by solid waste. Our results lend support to the conjecture that improved reliability of garbage collection service as well as better governance of relevant public and private institutions are key components of future policies to improve solid waste management in Accra.
