Australia's Northern Shield?: Papua New Guinea and the Defence of Australia since 1880

Australia's Northern Shield?: Papua New Guinea and the Defence of Australia since 1880 (Trade Paperback / Paperback)

              By Hunt, Bruce

This book is the first to draw extensively on the recently released highly classified notes of the cabinet room discussions of successive Australian Governments from 1950 to the mid-1970s and details the changing attitude of the nations leaders towards the place of Papua New Guin...ea in Australias defence and security outlook. The Cabinet Notebooks provide an uncensored and unprecedented insight into the opinion of Australias leaders towards Indonesia under Sukarno, Southeast Asia and Indo China in general, the changing nature of relations with Britain and the United States and, finally, towards Papua New Guinea. The cabinet room discussions reveal attitudes towards Asia and Australias place in the region more nuanced, varied and sensitive than previously known. They also illustrate the dominant influence of Prime Minister Robert Menzies and Deputy Prime Minister John McEwen in shaping Australias response to the critical events of this time. Australias Northern Shield? shows how, since colonial times, Australia has assessed the importance of Papua New Guinea by examining the ambitions of and threats from external sources, principally Imperial Germany, Japan, and Indonesia. It examines the significant change in Australias attitude as this region approached independence in 1975, amid concerns as to the new nations future stability and unity. The terms of Australias long-term defence undertaking are examined in detail and an examination is offered also of the most recent attempts to define the strategic importance of Papua New Guinea to Australia.

The US Lobby and Australian Defence Policy

The US Lobby and Australian Defence Policy (Trade Paperback / Paperback)

              By Scappatura, Vince

Australian society and its leaders generally take for granted the importance and value of this nation's relationship with the United States. The US is commonly thought of as the world's great purveyor of liberal values and the rule of law, and as a powerful friend indispensable t...o Australian security. In The US Lobby and Australian Defence Policy Vince Scappatura demonstrates how these conceptions are underpinned by the work of the Australian American Leadership Dialogue, Australia's most important, private, pro-US lobby group. As the inner workings of this lobby are unveiled for the first time, Scappatura also discusses the considerable costs to Australia of its strong military ties to the US, draws into question notions of 'benign' US power, and demonstrates that suggestions of the US keeping Australia safe from invasion are flatly wrong. For Australia's national security elite, other considerations, to do with power and wealth and spreading political influence, are to the fore.

Revolution in the City of Heroes: A Memoir of the Battle that Sparked Indonesia's National Revolution (Trade Paperback / Paperback)

By Padmodiwiryo, Suhario; Translated by Palmos, Frank

The battle of Surabaya looms large in the history of Indonesia. Yet the story of this battle is not well known outside of that nation. Based on the diary of 24-year-old Indonesian medical student Suhario Padmodiwiryo, Revolution in the City of Heroes is an evocative first-hand ac...count of the popular uprising in Surabaya. It vividly portrays the chaotic swirl of events and the heady emotion of young people ready to sacrifice their lives for independence, and is essential reading for Australians seeking to gain a better understanding of their increasingly important northern neighbour.

Island off the Coast of Asia: Instruments of Statecraft in Australian Foreign Policy is an unprecedented 230-year Australian study that reveals the central role of economic actors in defining and pursuing the `national interest'. Australia's search for security has meant much mor...e than protection from military invasion. It includes the security of economic interests, and the pursuit of a political order that secures them. This view of security has deep roots in Australia's geopolitical tradition. Australia began its existence on the winning side of a worldwide confrontation between imperial powers and the rest of the world. The book shows that the `organising principle' of Australian foreign policy is to stay on the winning side of the global contest. Australia has pursued this principle in war and peace, using the full arsenal of diplomacy, law, investment, research, negotiations, military force and espionage. This book uses many decades of secret files to reveal the inner workings of high-level policy. `This deeply researched and penetrating study of Australian foreign policy from the earliest days - with scrupulous use of secret files and close analysis of historical events - demonstrates convincingly that its essential continuity is rooted in the power and interests of the private sector, where fundamental economic decisions are made. Those demands determine the national interest and the goal of securing a political order that responds to them. A very valuable and instructive exercise in authentic realism, with lessons that generalize broadly.' - Noam Chomsky, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Arizona

A Naga Odyssey: Visier's Long Way Home (Trade Paperback / Paperback)

              By Broome, Richard; Sanyu, Visier

Visier Meyasetsu Sanyu, his family and fellow villagers of Khonoma, fled for their lives to the jungles of Nagaland in 1956. He and his family survived privations and starvation for over two years, though many others did not. Visier emerged from the jungle aged eight and into a t...urbulent world altered by Western influence, civil war and colonial oppression. He found refuge from war in Australia, where during two decades he faced the loss of home and tradition, and found healing and a second home. This powerful story tracks Visier's fascinating journey from indigenous religion to Christianity, from village school to a professorship, and from small town life to appearances before the United Nations. His kaleidoscopic sixty-year odyssey to find peace, tranquillity, and forgiveness for others, is vividly told against the rich tapestry of the Naga quest to be free.

Trust in Australian democracy has more than halved over the last decade, from 86% in 2007 to 41% in 2018. Part of this erosion of trust stems from a belief that big business has too much power. Community concerns have sparked major campaigns for a federal anti-corruption body and... political donations reform. People are concerned that politicians are privileging the concerns of their mates in big business over the community or the public good. This book sets out to test the evidence for these public fears, considering mining companies and the mining tax; the banks and the financial advice scandals; Telstra and the NBN; News Ltd and media reform; Coles and Woolworths versus the farmers; and attempts by government to reform contract laws, and laws on the abuse of market power. It asks if the major corporates are disproportionately winning in our political debates, and if so, why?
