The passage of the HITECH Act by the U.S. federal government in 2009, and the implementation of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Electronic Health Record (EHR) Meaningful Use (MU) incentive program was grounded on the assumption that EHR's would yield multiple ...benefits for patients, providers, and the general public. Yet it did not take long after the programs launch before an array of voices sought evidence surrounding the value realized from the billions of dollars invested in EHRs. While a number of digital health case studies, peer-reviewed research articles, and general interest stories began to appear in various publications, there was no semblance of order to the various value benefits expressed in the literature. In response, HIMSS set out to develop a dynamic framework by which to easily catalogue the varied beneficial evidences of digital health. From this effort, HIMSS introduced to the market the HIMSS Value STEPS (TM) framework. This book will leverage the HIMSS Value STEPS (TM) model to identify and define the expressions of value the use of health IT systems can yield per the following domains: Satisfaction, Treatment/Clinical, Electronic Secure Data, Patient Engagement and Population Health, and Savings. Using this framework, HIMSS has developed a collection of over 2,000 cases reflecting the value that hospitals, health systems and other providers have experienced following implementation of their electronic health record and/or other IT-related applications. The more than 17,000 value statements that have been extracted from the 2,000+ case articles have been classified within 85 Standard Value Standard (SVS) within the five STEPS domains. The book will describe the STEPS model, and use the content in the HIMSS EHR Value Collection to demonstrate the impact of health IT in healthcare organizations, and the quality of care and overall financial and operational performance improvements that have been achieved. Our current healthcare system's broken. The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) predicts health care costs could increase from 6% to 14% of GDP by 2060. The cause of this increase is due to (1) a global aging population, (2) growing affluence, (3) rise i...n chronic diseases, and (4) better-informed patients; all of which raises the demand for healthcare. In 2006, Michael Porter and Elizabeth Teisberg authored the book 'Redefining Health Care: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results.' In it, they present their analysis of the root causes plaguing the health care industry and make the case for why providers, suppliers, consumers, and employers should move towards a patient-centric approach that optimizes value for patients. According to Porter, value for patients should be the overarching principle for our broken system. Since 2006, Mr. Porter, accompanied by his esteemed Harvard colleague, Robert Kaplan, have worked tirelessly to promote this new approach and pilot it with leading healthcare delivery organizations like Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, MD Anderson, and U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. Given the current state of global healthcare, there is urgency to achieve widespread adoption of this new approach. The intent of this book is to equip all healthcare delivery organizations with a guide for putting the value-based concept into practice. This book defines the practice of value-based health care as Value Management. The book explores Mr. Porter's Value Equation (Value = Costs/Outcomes), which is central to Value Management, and provides a step-by-step process for how to calculate the components of this equation. On the outcomes side, the book presents the Value Realization Framework, which translates organizational mission and strategy into a comprehensive set of performance measures and contextualizes the measures for healthcare delivery. On the costs side, the book details the Harvard endorsed time-driven activity based costi

This book is about the development, delivery, roll-out and sustainment of the electronic health records using Lean management principles. Included in the book will be a reason for action (change) that includes user dissatisfaction, increased operational and delivery expense, poor... outcomes, lack of integration, and poor sustainment and optimization beyond deployment. The book will cover lean thinking in the requirements planning, designing, testing go-live, and sustainability phases of an EHR new installation, or optimization. Lean Thinking within the healthcare industry has been gaining some traction over the last decade. Organizations have started to see improvement in staff and physician engagement, quality outcomes, access to services, and cost. Unfortunately, these improvements have not been realized in the leveraging of the EHR to improve outcomes and lower healthcare costs. There is no existing book that covers this topic and there is a known need in the marketplace.

When hospitals began implementing their electronic medical records/electronic health records systems (EMR/HER) the pharmaceutical companies that were conducting clinical trials at those hospitals wanted to sue the date from those systems instead of having the hospitals enter the ...data in their EHR systems and also in the study data entry system. However, the FDA regulations would require that the hospital systems be validated . The hospitals and the companies developing the systems argued that was over-regulation. HIMSS published their Developer Code of Conduct where they said instead they would use Quality Management techniques. This book covers how to use Quality Management (ISO 9001) to develop computer systems, specifically EMR systems. It gives a basic introduction to how to implement computer systems. It also covers the topic of compliance because the hospitals are required to comply with regulations other than FDS regulations. The book also discusses the topics of risk management and conducting audits, both of which are part of ISO 9001 quality management of computer systems. The book is designed to give the reader an introduction to the things you have to do when implementing a computer system that has to satisfy some standards and where the accuracy of the information could impact the accuracy of a person's medical treatment.
