John Glaser has been an astute observer and recognized leader in the health care industry for over thirty years. He has written a regular column for Hospitals & Health Networks in which he comments on a wide range of topics, including improving organizational performance through ...health information technology (HIT), changes in HIT architecture, challenges in leveraging data, and the evolution of the role of IT leadership. Glaser on Health Care IT: Perspectives from the Decade that Defined Health Care Information Technology is a collection of some of the most widely read articles that have been published in H&HN Daily, H&HN Weekly, and Most Wired Online in the past decade (2005-2015). The columns are dated to show their original publication dates, and the material is organized into four broad themes: * HIT Applications and Analytics Challenges * Improving Organizational Performance through HIT * IT Management Challenges * HIT Industry Observations Each section offers readers an intimate look at the myriad issues associated with getting IT right and the organizational performance gains that can be achieved in doing so. Moreover, the book examines the power and potential of the technologies available to health care providers today, as well as the transformative nature of those we have yet to fully embrace. From seasoned CIOs and consultants to software developers and nurses, this book provides invaluable insights and guidance to all those seeking to make the delivery of care safer, more effective, and more efficient through the application of health care IT. Performance management, often referred to as process management, is a strategy that can be used to achieve an optimum mix of quality, safety, patient satisfaction and solvency. The basis of performance management is the effective use of resources, as measured by quantifying proce...sses and outcomes using key performance indicators (KPIs) - core measures that gauge the performance of an organization in particular areas. There is more to performance management than selecting a few KPIs from a list and feeding them into a graphical dashboard system. It's about behavior change, leadership, and vision. Written for administrators, clinical staff, process improvement managers and information technology personnel of healthcare organizations, this second edition provides the knowledge necessary to provide the leadership and vision for a performance measurement initiative. This practical resource provides a high-level review of the quality/safety initiatives in healthcare, describes the implementation process from an IT perspective, and offers high-level clinical, financial and cultural details. It features an extensive listing of clinical and non-clinical KPIs: a glossary including financial, medical, and operational terms; and appendices of organizations and sources of indicators and benchmarks.

This book is about the development, delivery, roll-out and sustainment of the electronic health records using Lean management principles. Included in the book will be a reason for action (change) that includes user dissatisfaction, increased operational and delivery expense, poor... outcomes, lack of integration, and poor sustainment and optimization beyond deployment. The book will cover lean thinking in the requirements planning, designing, testing go-live, and sustainability phases of an EHR new installation, or optimization. Lean Thinking within the healthcare industry has been gaining some traction over the last decade. Organizations have started to see improvement in staff and physician engagement, quality outcomes, access to services, and cost. Unfortunately, these improvements have not been realized in the leveraging of the EHR to improve outcomes and lower healthcare costs. There is no existing book that covers this topic and there is a known need in the marketplace.

The passage of the HITECH Act by the U.S. federal government in 2009, and the implementation of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Electronic Health Record (EHR) Meaningful Use (MU) incentive program was grounded on the assumption that EHR's would yield multiple ...benefits for patients, providers, and the general public. Yet it did not take long after the programs launch before an array of voices sought evidence surrounding the value realized from the billions of dollars invested in EHRs. While a number of digital health case studies, peer-reviewed research articles, and general interest stories began to appear in various publications, there was no semblance of order to the various value benefits expressed in the literature. In response, HIMSS set out to develop a dynamic framework by which to easily catalogue the varied beneficial evidences of digital health. From this effort, HIMSS introduced to the market the HIMSS Value STEPS (TM) framework. This book will leverage the HIMSS Value STEPS (TM) model to identify and define the expressions of value the use of health IT systems can yield per the following domains: Satisfaction, Treatment/Clinical, Electronic Secure Data, Patient Engagement and Population Health, and Savings. Using this framework, HIMSS has developed a collection of over 2,000 cases reflecting the value that hospitals, health systems and other providers have experienced following implementation of their electronic health record and/or other IT-related applications. The more than 17,000 value statements that have been extracted from the 2,000+ case articles have been classified within 85 Standard Value Standard (SVS) within the five STEPS domains. The book will describe the STEPS model, and use the content in the HIMSS EHR Value Collection to demonstrate the impact of health IT in healthcare organizations, and the quality of care and overall financial and operational performance improvements that have been achieved.
