First published in 1986. The teaching of children with severe learning difficulties had received little coherent critical analysis. Long-held assumptions and implicit beliefs were embedded in curriculum content and teaching methodology, thus creating and maintaining handicapping ...conditions. This book raises questions about underlying value judgments relating to the status and rights afforded to children with severe learning difficulties and the implications for education and teaching. Possibilities for change are discussed in relation to the curriculum, the content of the educational programme and the teacher-pupil relationship.

First published in 1985. The field of mental handicap is a broad one encompassing the interests of many professional groups. As a result, there is a need periodically to present wide-ranging reviews of advances in the field. This is the central aim of this volume. Two chapters fo...cus on the cognitive domain, and are especially pertinent in view of the recent release of the new Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children which uses Das's theoretical position as its foundation. Another contribution reviews the area of non-speech communication with those with special needs, a subject of much current interest and controversy. Other chapters focus on major issues such as maladaptive behaviour and deinstitionalization and use of new technology. The book is thus likely to be relevant to all those with an interest in advances in mental handicap research.

First published in 1986. Aimed at teachers, students and related professions this book serves to bridge the gap between the theory and practice of educating pupils with severe learning difficulties. In the light of the 1981 Education Act it is crucial to identify, and subsequentl...y meet, the needs of these pupils. This can only be done by an in-depth understanding of curriculum design, child development and the learning process. This book incorporates these aspects together with an appreciation of teaching techniques and school and classroom organisation. It explains how the parents, school staff and linked agencies complement this procedure.

First published in 1984. Screening and prevention are key issues in health, education and welfare, yet they are also extremely vague. Many professionals are unaware of what can be done and who should do it, particularly in the important area of screening young children for specia...l educational or medical provision. This book considers the problem from the standpoint of a whole range of professionals involved in education, health or social provision. Each chapter focuses on a number of points: problems faced by the professional in question; the sort of job screening procedures that exist or are possible; the sort of tests and assessments that are used; referral; and the sort of intervention procedures that are possible. Case study material is included throughout and the book concludes with a review of the problems of collaboration and of establishing an effective screening system. The book should thus be of immediate interest to students and professionals in a wide range of work that involves children.

First published in 1986. Following the Warnock report, schools attempted to integrate the teaching of children with special needs into ordinary classrooms. Many teachers had no experience of teaching children with special needs and the new developments were likely to pose a subst...antial challenge. This book provides a guidance for inexperienced, especially new, teachers in how to teach children with special needs in ordinary classrooms. An important feature of the book is realism - the book grows out of the author's own experiences and research. The author describes what really happens and bases his suggestions on practices which are likely to bring results.

Self-Esteem in Children with Special Educational Needs

First published in 1988. The mounting concern in schools over widespread failure in academic achievement, greater disaffection in children and the lack of confidence in many school leavers are highlighted by the difficulties experienced by children who have special educational ne...eds. Within this group the importance of the child's evaluation of him or herself - i.e. self-esteem - is a neglected issue. This book investigates how the level of self-esteem appears to influence social behaviour and school performance in children with special educational needs. It discusses the practical steps that can be taken to assess and enhance self-esteem in children with special needs and evaluates their effectiveness. The author emphasises the discrepancy between the performance of children who have special educational needs in ordinary classrooms with that achieved in special settings. He argues that the negative impact on a child's self-esteem created by placing him/her in an ordinary classroom may outweigh the benefits of greater integration. A full and informative treatment of both the theoretical and practical implications of a neglected subject, this text book is suitable for experienced special educational needs teachers and those undergoing teacher training, as well as psychologists with an academic interest in the self-concept or a professional involvement in assessing children.

First published in 1997. This book compares and contrasts the experiences of deviant pupils in a mainstream school with that of those in a special unit for pupils with behavioural problems. The author's aims are to (i) evaluate the differences between the behaviour of deviant boy...s and girls within the mainstream education system with those without; and (ii) justify the criteria for transferring deviant pupils to special units. Her research shows that there is no uniformity in the deviant behaviour of pupils in either situation. In fact, there are more similarities in the behaviour of pupils across the dividing line than pupils in the same institution. Such findings raise questions about the apparent arbitrary nature if some transferral decisions and, in the longer term, the whole logic of separate schooling for pupils who are considered by some to be a problem. At a time when market forces and competition have distracted the schools' attention away from the needs of the individual pupil, this book stresses the need for changes at all levels which will make school relevant to the lives of all pupils.
