A South Auckland petrol station is the setting for this independent drama about graveyard shift worker Tania (Sophie Henderson, also the film's writer and based on her one-woman stageplay), whose long nights are spent chipping away at the savings she needs to leave with her littl...e brother in search of their father. Raised Maori, Tania's bonds to her whanau underpin a life spent caring for her ailing mother during the day and preparing to take her brother Piwakawaka overseas. But as he leaves to pick kiwifruit and Tania is stuck at the gas station with a slack manager and an eagle-eyed regional supervisor, it seems she's not able to look after her family to the same extent. A product of the NZ Film Commission's Escalator scheme, this low-budget feature, shot in just 20 days, brings Henderson's piece to the big screen courtesy of first-time director Curtis Vowell

When making this Bookbinding DVD series master bookbinder PETER GOODWIN kept libraries, rare book departments and special collections in the forefront of his mind. This license allows libraries and institutions to do this in addition to normal services. In this DVD, master bookbi...nder Peter Goodwin shows how he approaches this unusual binding. At the same time he demonstrates how he binds the traditional half-bound leather book which is seen in libraries all over the world. To make the maps in an atlas lie straight with no thread showing requires a special sewing technique. He demonstrates the use of the "plough". This was the old fashioned method of cutting edges before the guillotine was invented. It is rarely seen today and written explanations are hard to understand. However once seen never forgotten. Colored hand-sewn head bands, paper repair and traditional half-leather binding are also covered in detail. It is a treat to watch Peter Goodwin show how easy it is for beginners to work with leather. His no fuss approach is refreshing.

Narrated by Dan Aykroyd, Defend, Conserve, Protect pits the marine conservation group, Sea Shepherd - a passionate group of eco-activists - against the Japanese whaling fleet, in an epic battle to defend the majestic Minke whales of the Southern Ocean. These noble, curious Minkes... are easy prey for the Japanese, who claim to kill in the name of science an assertion that has been widely discredited outside Japan for years. At the helm of Sea Shepherd is 28-year old Captain Peter Hammarstedt who carries with him the resolve of Melville's Captain Ahab - only Hammarstedt hunts the whaling ships not the whales. This is the incredible true story of what happens when a small group of determined people stand up against an aggressive corporation flagrantly defying international law. Produced in Australia and successfully financed through a global crowdfunding effort, where over 750 passionate environmentalists pledged funds, Defend, Conserve, Protect took more than four years to make, and was shot across France, The Netherlands, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica.

In rural Cambodia, spirited 14-year-old Chakra (Sam Heng) works the rice fields with his family. He yearns for independence and seeks out a local broker who can get him paid work in a Thai factory. Without telling his family, Chakra travels to Bangkok to make his fortune. Chakra ...secretly journeys across the border and finally arrives in Thailand. But there he and his new friend Kea (Mony Ros, Hex) realise the broker has lied to them. Both Chakra and Kea, along with other Cambodians and Burmese, are sold to a fishing captain as slaves. They are trapped at sea indefinitely, trawling fish 22 hours a day, surviving on just a handful of cold rice. Captain Rom Ran (Thanawut Kasro, The Cave) quickly weeds out those slaves weakened by the conditions or trying to escape, and throws them overboard. The trawler sells its catch and restocks its supplies without going to land, making escape impossible. As fellow slaves are tortured and murdered around them, Kea begins to lose his mind. When his only ally is killed, Chakra looks to Rom Ran to understand what it will take to be free. With hope and humanity dwindling, Chakra decides to take control of the trawler.
